Renault want Alonso back - report

posted by admin in cnn, news

MILAN, Italy (AP) — Fernando Alonso has reportedly been offered a return to Renault, the Formula One team where he won the 2005 and ‘06 world championships.

I have presented a project for the future to Fernando, Renault boss Flavio Briatore told Web site of Gazzetta dello Sport on Saturday. If his desires coincide with ours, it can happen.

Alonso quit McLaren on Friday after only one season with the British team following clashes with boss Ron Dennis and teammate Lewis Hamilton.

Alonso finished third overall, behind champion Kimi Raikkonen of Ferrari and Hamilton.

I know how much he can still give Renault, Briatore said. But a one-year deal would make no sense.

Giancarlo Fisichella and Heikki Kovalainen are the current drivers for Renault.

Alonso, who spent five seasons at Renault from 2002-06, has also been linked with a move to Williams or Red Bull in 2008 and then to Ferrari in 2009. E-mail to a friend

Million pounds of beef recalled

posted by admin in cnn, news

MINNEAPOLIS, Minnesota (AP) — The giant agribusiness company Cargill Inc. said Saturday it is recalling more than 1 million pounds of ground beef that may be contaminated with E. coli bacteria.

The ground beef was produced October 8-11 at Cargill Meat Solutions’ plant in Wyalusing, Pennsylvania and distributed to retailers.

Affected retailers include Giant, Shop Rite, Stop Shop, Wegmans and Weis in Connecticut, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Virginia.

Cargill learned the meat may be contaminated after the Agriculture Department found a problem with a sample of the beef produced on October 8, the company said. The bacterium is E. coli O157:H7.

No illnesses have been associated with this product, John Keating, president of Cargill Regional Beef, said in a statement. We are working closely with the USDA to remove this product from the marketplace.

E. coli is harbored in the intestines of cattle. Improper butchering and processing can cause the E. coli to get onto meat. Thorough cooking, to at least 160 degrees internal temperature, can destroy the bacteria.

E. coli O157:H7 is a potentially deadly bacterium that can cause bloody diarrhea and dehydration. The very young, seniors and people with compromised immune systems are the most susceptible to E. coli.

Cargill Meat Solutions, based in Wichita, Kansas, is the umbrella organization of Cargill’s beef, pork and turkey businesses.

The Wyalusing plant produces 200 million pounds of ground beef annually.

Cargill Inc., based in Wayzata, Minnesota, is one of the nation’s largest privately held companies. It makes food ingredients, moves commodities around the world and runs financial commodities trading businesses.

Space crew fixes solar wing

posted by admin in cnn, news

HOUSTON, Texas (AP) — A spacewalking astronaut fixed a ripped solar energy panel on the international space station Saturday in a difficult and dangerous emergency procedure.

Spacewalker Scott Parazynski installed five improvised cufflink braces on the torn wing and clipped the snarled wires that had ripped it in two places as it was being unfurled Tuesday.

He then watched as the crew slowly deployed the wing to its full 115-foot length, watching closely for more problems. The wing was about three-quarters unfurled when the crew noticed the damage on Tuesday.

Excellent work, guys, excellent, space station commander Peggy Whitson said after the wing was locked in place.

Before we do the victory dance let’s get Scott safely back to structure and then we can all rejoice, Discovery commander Pamela Melroy said as the shuttle’s robotic arm started carrying Parazynski back to the station.

Perched at the tip of the 90-foot robotic arm and boom extension, Parazynski worked at the far left end of the linked shuttle-station complex, about 50 yards away from the pressurized compartments where the astronauts work and live.

The ugly snag involved a guide wire, two hinge wires and two grommets. Parazynski first clipped a hinge wire near the larger tear, using a special tool that looked like a hockey stick to make sure the panel didn’t spring back and hit him.

It’s a bit of a reach here, Parazynski said as he stretched to cut part of the guide wire.

It’s what those monkey arms are for, Melroy said, referring to Parazynski’s 6-foot-2 height.

As soon as Parazynski cut the guide wire, the approximately 90-foot stretch of it recoiled all the way down into a reel where fellow spacewalker Douglas Wheelock was controlling and monitoring it. To everyone’s relief, it retracted smoothly. Beautiful. Nicely done, Parazynski reported.

Parazynski’s helmet camera sent close-up pictures of the damage to Mission Control and the space station, allowing the astronauts and experts on the ground to discuss the best way to tackle the damage on the gold-colored wing.

The solar panel captures sunlight to generate electricity, and is alive with more than 100 volts of electricity, possibly as much as 160 volts.

To reduce the risk of Parazynski being shocked, all of the metal parts on his spacesuit were covered with insulating tape — triple-taped, in fact — as were all his tools.

Wheelock also kept a close eye on Parazynski and his tools, guiding him to lean back when he got a bit too close to the swaying wing.

Without repairs, the wing posed a structural hazard for the international space station. The damage could have worsened and the wing could have become unstable, possibly forcing NASA to cut it loose and lose a vital power source for future laboratories.

It was Parazynski’s fourth spacewalk this mission and the seventh of his 15-year astronaut career.

Schalke slump to defeat at Cottbus

posted by admin in cnn, news

BERLIN, Germany — Schalke slumped to their second Bundesliga defeat of the season as a goal from Christian Bassila gave Energie Cottbus a 1-0 victory — their first league win.

The former France youth international exploited a mix-up in the Schalke defence to score in the opening minute of the second half.

The win was Cottbus’ first since April but they remain at the foot of the table on eight points, with Schalke in fifth ahead of the weekend’s program.

Cottbus created a storm in September whenb they sacked coach Petrik Sander and replaced him with Bojan Prasnikar.

Sander’s axing was attacked by his fellow Bundesliga managers and Germany coach Joachim Loew — who were upset at the treatment meted out to the man who guided Cottbus to promotion two seasons ago. E-mail to a friend

Hilfenhaus comes into Aussie squad

posted by admin in cnn, news

BRISBANE, Australia — Paceman Ben Hilfenhaus has replaced the injured Shaun Tait in Australia’s squad for next week’s opening Test against Sri Lanka at the Gabba — starting on Thursday.

Chairman of selectors Andrew Hilditch said Tait had been ruled out with an elbow injury. It’s disappointing for Shaun to have suffered a slight aggravation to his elbow in the lead-up to the Test, said Hilditch.

Whilst this is disappointing for Shaun, it creates an opportunity for Ben to come into the squad.

Ben richly deserves his opportunity after a magnificent Sheffield Shield season last year. He also impressed all with his involvement around the Australian squad in the one-day international series in India last month.

Hilfenhaus has played one limited-over international, taking 1-26 against New Zealand off seven overs in Hobart last January, but has yet to play a Test.

Australian physiotherapist Alex Kountouris said that Tait’s injury was only minor. Shaun had been progressing well following elbow surgery in May this year and this would appear be a short-term setback, he said. E-mail to a friend
