U.S. envoy meets with Pakistani leader

posted by admin in cnn, news

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan (CNN) — U.S. Deputy Secretary of State John Negroponte met with Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf for two hours Saturday in a bid to urge the president to help stabilize the growing unrest in his country.

The U.S. envoy was expected to deliver a strong message of growing impatience from the United States, urging Musharraf to end his emergency decree and prepare for free elections.

So far, Musharraf has not shown any indication he will take the American advice.

Musharraf, who issued the emergency order on November 3, swore in seven hand-picked allies into a caretaker government on Friday despite an earlier pledge to include people of a neutral band.

Negroponte was expected to warn Musharraf during the meeting that his base was rapidly eroding and unless he lifts the state of emergency, takes off the uniform and sets a date for elections, there would be little the United States could do to help.

The U.S. envoy was expected to push for a specific date for elections and a commitment to lift the emergency before then, officials said.

Negroponte also met with Army Vice Chair Ashfaq Kiani, who is expected to take Musharraf’s place as head of the military, which holds a lot of influence over Musharraf.

U.S. State Department officials said the meeting was a way to apply pressure on Musharraf and that the United States may appeal to the army to help solve the crisis.

Officials said Negroponte would continue to push Musharraf for a deal with opposition leader Benazir Bhutto and see what it would take for a deal to go forward, as it represents the greatest chances for stability in Pakistan.

Bhutto, who spoke by phone with Negroponte after his arrival in Pakistan on Friday, reiterated her call for Musharraf to step down as president, pledging to mount public pressure against him.

A State Department official said Bhutto asked Negroponte to use U.S. aid as leverage to force Musharraf to meet her demands.

U.S. State Department spokesman Scott McCormack said that Negroponte discussed with Bhutto the importance of moderate forces working together in Pakistan for a better future for Pakistan, and also to get Pakistan back on the pathway to constitutional and democratic rule.

Our hope is — for Pakistan and for the Pakistani people — that Pakistan can resume that course, he said in Washington. In order to do that, it’s our assessment that those moderate forces within Pakistani political society are going to need to work together, not only to get back to that point where you have constitutional democratic rule, but for the day after and the day after that.

Bhutto, speaking to PBS’ New Hour with Jim Lehrer prior to her conversation with Negroponte, said that a request from the American diplomat to get back on track with Musharraf would not be granted.

I’ve spent 18 months talking to General Musharraf, the former prime minister said. And at the last minute, he dumped the road map to democracy and went back to military dictatorship. And I ask myself, does he simply want to engage me in talks, which will again lead nowhere?

Saying Musharraf’s promises have been too vague, too generalized, too little, too late, raising hopes, dashing them, raising hopes, dashing them, she said that Negroponte should discuss an exit strategy with the Pakistani president.

He’s not a bad man, she said. He’s not an unreasonable man. I’ve met him. I’ve talked to him. So he must think of Pakistan now. And if it’s in Pakistan’s best interest, he must quit. But there needs to be a post-Musharraf order worked out.

Bhutto, whose two stints as prime minister were plagued with accusations of corruption, said it was unlikely her Pakistan Peoples’ Party’s participation would participate in coming parliamentary elections, which Musharraf has promised will take place before January 9.

If Musharraf does not step down, she said, her party would mount public pressure, to end martial law, and return Pakistan to its rightful masters, who are the people of this great nation.

Meanwhile, Musharraf swore in his new cabinet Friday, setting in place the caretaker government that will oversee Pakistan’s parliamentary process until the elections can be held.

An old cabinet is gone and a new cabinet — a caretaker government — has been sworn in, Musharraf said.

The event, carried live on Pakistani state-run TV, showed the new members taking an oath to bear true faith to Pakistan, among other pledges.

Life continues, no body is permanent, Musharraf said. One comes, one serves, tries one’s best in the interest of the nation … and then when they have to go that is the way of nature, they have to leave and this is what is democracy.

The interim cabinet is led by newly installed Prime Minister Mohammad Mian Soomro, who previously served as chairman of the Senate — a key post because the Senate chairman is acting president when Musharraf is outside the country.

We are creating history because I think never has Pakistan seen such a smooth transition of government, Musharraf said after the official ceremony. The ex-prime minister is sitting right in front of us. Never has such a smooth transition taken place before.

Thursday marked the end of the term for Pakistan’s parliament and provincial assemblies, which are scheduled to dissolve by November 20, according to Musharraf.

Musharraf’s term was set to end Thursday, but the military leader remained at the helm via extraordinary powers granted through the emergency declaration that extends his presidential term.

Musharraf has pledged to take off the uniform when he is sworn in to his third term as president.

Earlier this month, Musharraf replaced a number of Supreme Court justices with his allies after sacking nearly all of them in the name of the emergency order imposed, he said, to tackle Islamic militancy and save Pakistan from governmental paralysis caused by a meddling judiciary.

He has said the order improves stability and will foster peaceful parliamentary elections. The exact date for the elections will be set by Pakistan’s Election Commission.

Bhutto and other opposition leaders have accused Musharraf of imposing the emergency order so he could remain in power by avoiding an expected ruling from the previous Supreme Court that would have nullified his October election victory.

Nearly all leaders of Pakistani opposition parties have been jailed or placed under house arrest, and charged under anti-terrorism measures. Bhutto herself was placed twice under house arrest, most recently released Friday morning.

Late Friday, on orders from Musharraf, top Pakistani networks Geo TV and ARY Digital were taken off the air by authorities in Dubai, where their transmissions originated.

Geo broadcasters, who said only their news programming was affected, told CNN om Saturday they were in shock from the action. On its Web site, several Geo TV anchors and analysts condemned this fresh government attack on the media.

Geo TV and ARY Digital already had been taken out of Pakistan’s cable line-up; the latest action means their signal is no long available by satellite.

Meanwhile, the government of the United Arab Emirates, of which Dubai is a member state, issued a written statement Saturday through its Emirates News Agency, in which it appeared to take no side in the matters.

The UAE has always played a positive and constructive role in international affairs, and neutrality has been a key principle of its foreign policy, said Ibrahim Al-Abed, general director of the news agency and director of the National Media Council.

In light of the current sensitive state of affairs in Pakistan, the UAE can only assume its responsibility and maintain its neutrality, he said.

Turkey in pole position after win

posted by admin in cnn, news

OSLO, Norway — Turkey are favorites to join Greece at the Euro 2008 finals after coming from behind to defeat Norway 2-1 in Group C in Oslo and leave the Scandinavian side facing qualifying heartache.

In foggy conditions, Norway went ahead in the 12th minute with a stunning overhead kick from defender Erik Hagen, but Turkey equalised through Emre on 31 minutes before sealing victory with Nihat Kahveci’s strike 14 minutes into the second half.

Norway have not qualified for a major tournament since Euro 2000 and, after missing out in the play-offs for Euro 2004 and last summer’s World Cup, they kicked off knowing victory would break that run.

Norway took the lead with a goal of real quality. Steffen Iversen flicked on a free-kick and Hagen, with his back to goal, controlled the ball on his chest before rifling an overhead kick into the roof of the net.

John Carew had a header saved as Norway searched for a second goal, although Turkey remained dangerous and got back into the game on 31 minutes.

Emre beat his man on the edge of the box, made space and blasted a dipping drive beyond Norway goalkeeper Hakon Opdal.

Fatih Terim’s men were now in the ascendancy and Hamit Altintop came close again with a long-range attempt on 40 minutes before Morten Gamst Pedersen was thwarted by Turkey keeper Volkan Demirel at the other end.

Villarreal forward Nihat scored what proved to be the winner in the 59th minute, receiving the ball from substitute Gokhan Gonul before shooting past Opdal.

Turkey will qualify if they defeat Bosnia at home on Wednesday. They are second in the group, one point above Norway who visit Malta with their fate out of their hands.

Holders Greece have already clinched qualification as group winners, and they ended their home campaign in style with a convincing 5-0 victory over Malta, with Bayer Leverkusen striker Theofanis Gekas helping himself to a hat-trick.

Meanwhile, Poland will line up alongside Europe’s elite for the first time in Austria and Switzerland next summer after goals from Euzebiusz Smolarek either side of half-time against Belgium secured a 2-0 victory and safe passage from Group A.

Smolarek took advantage of two lucky breaks to score twice in five minutes and send the hosts through.

The 26-year-old netted his first on 45 minutes, showing real pace to race on to a loose ball, evade goalkeeper Stijn Stijnen and slide the ball into the empty net.

The forward was again in the right place at the right time four minutes after the restart, chipping the ball cheekily over Stijnen. E-mail to a friend

Germany prove too good for Cyprus

HANNOVER, Germany — Germany maintained the pressure on the Czech Republic in the race for top spot in Group D with a comfortable 4-0 win against Cyprus in Hannover.

Both sides have already qualified for EURO 2008 but Germany showed no sign of letting up as Bayern Munich pair Miroslav Klose and Lukas Podolski struck either side of half-time to build on Clemens Fritz’s second-minute opener.

Thomas Hitzlsperger added the fourth in the 82nd minute as Germany claimed their eighth win in the group to move level with the Czech Republic on 26 points.

Germany were quick out of the blocks and celebrated their first goal after less than 120 seconds. Podolski’s determination paid off and he pulled the ball back from the goalline for Fritz to score with a far-post header.

Klose added the second on 20 minutes, accepting a pass from the selfless Fritz in a central position and firing in from eight meters out.

Podolski was Germany’s main threat, and he finally got the goal an excellent performance warranted when he turned in Klose’s low cross from the right eight minutes into the second half.

The impressive Podolski turned provider for the final goal eight minutes from time, making a determined run to the goalline before squaring for Hitzlsperger, whose simple tap-in completed the scoring.

Meanwhile, Arsenal midfielder Tomas Rosicky was among the goals for the Czech Republic as they beat neighbors Slovakia 3-1 in Prague to remain top of the group by virtue of their head-to-head with Germany.

Germany conclude their qualifying campaign at home to Wales on Wednesday while the Czech Republic travel to Cyprus.

Meanwhile, the Netherlands secured their place in the finals with a narrow 1-0 win over Luxembourg in Group G.

Danny Koevermans scored the only goal for the Dutch two minutes before half time to seal their place in the finals alongside Romania — who remain top of the group having already qualified, despite losing 1-0 to Bulgaria in Sofia. E-mail to a friend

Sharpton to continue James Brown’s Thanksgiving giveaway

posted by admin in cnn, news

AUGUSTA, Georgia (AP) — A Thanksgiving tradition sponsored by James Brown is being continued in this first year after the soul pioneer’s death with the annual turkey giveaway in his hometown.

In his place, longtime confidant and civil rights activist Al Sharpton will hand out the first turkey Monday.

Brown started the turkey tradition in 1991. He died of heart failure last Christmas at age 73.

More than 1,000 turkeys are usually distributed at the pre-Thanksgiving event, said the Rev. Larry Fryer, who assisted Brown with previous giveaways.

The Brown family also will continue Brown’s annual Christmas toy giveaway on December 20.

We’re the ones who decided to do what we know dad would have wanted us to do, his daughter, Deanna Brown Thomas, said Friday. These are two events that held dearest to dad’s heart.

Thomas said her father left no doubt that he wanted his children to carry on this tradition.

Daddy told me one time ‘I expect for y’all to continue this,’ she said. And he ain’t just any daddy. He’s James Brown.

The family asked for donations to keep the events alive. As of Friday, an account set up at First Bank of Georgia had received $4,500, a bank representative said.

Riquelme’s double lifts Argentina

posted by admin in cnn, news

BUENOS AIRES, Argentina — Juan Roman Riquelme scored twice as Argentina beat Bolivia 3-0 to notch a third successive victory in the South American qualifiers for the 2010 World Cup on Saturday.

The midfielder followed up his brace of spectacular free-kicks in the opening 2-0 victory against Chile to help put his country five points clear of second-placed Brazil, who play Peru in Lima on Sunday.

Riquelme again shrugged off his lack of club action with Villarreal, where he has fallen out with the Spanish side’s management, to net twice in the second spell after Sergio Aguero gave the home side a first-half lead.

The 19-year-old scored his first goal at international level five minutes before the interval after starting in a three-man attack with Carlos Tevez and Lionel Messi.

He headed home after Martin Demichelis nodded a cross from Manchester United striker Tevez back across goal.

Riquelme added the second 11 minutes after the break with a dipping free-kick which beat Carlos Arias from 25 yards, having been superbly denied by the keeper’s one-handed effort shortly beforehand.

And he finished off the scoring in the 73rd minute with a cool sidefoot finish after being set up by Messi to cap off a match in which captain Javier Zanetti made a record-breaking 116th appearance for Argentina.

Argentina next travel to Colombia on Tuesday, when winless Bolivia have an away clash with Venezuela.
