Gunman fatally shot after opening fire in church

posted by admin in cnn, news

(CNN) — A black-clad man armed with a rifle opened fire on worshippers inside a Colorado Springs, Colorado, megachurch Sunday afternoon, wounding several people, church and hospital officials reported.

The gunman was then shot to death, a minister said.

Rob Brendle, an associate pastor at New Life Church, said the attack took place after a late-morning service.

Amy Sufak, a spokeswoman for Penrose-St. Francis Hospital in Colorado Springs, told CNN that several victims were taken to the hospital.

Colorado Springs Police Chief Rick Myers would confirm no details of the incident, calling it a very dynamic situation right now.

Lt. Lari Sevene, a spokeswoman for the El Paso County Sheriff’s Department, said the attack took place shortly after 1 p.m. and said possibly two or three people were wounded. She could not confirm the death of the gunman and referred further questions to the Colorado Springs Police Department.

But Brendle told CNN the gunman was dead.

The shooting at New Life Church came about 12 hours after a shooting at a missionary training center in Arvada, outside Denver, left two people dead and two wounded. The gunman in that incident is still being sought by police.

As of Sunday afternoon, there was no known connection between the two incidents. Arvada and Colorado Springs are about 70 miles apart.

The non-denominational church is on the northwestern outskirts of Colorado Springs, near the U.S. Air Force Academy. It claims a membership of more than 10,000.

The church was founded by the Rev. Ted Haggard, an evangelical Christian leader who was ousted in 2006 after allegations that he had been a client of a male prostitute from whom he had purchased drugs. Haggard admitted to undisclosed sexual immorality and called himself a deceiver and a liar in a letter to the congregation.

Student arrested after threats to attack campus

posted by admin in cnn, news

LOS ANGELES, California (AP) — Los Angeles police arrested a 21-year-old Loyola Marymount University student in connection with an online threat to shoot people on campus, officials said Saturday.

Police arrested Carlos Huerta, a senior at Loyola, for investigation of making criminal threats. Huerta was taken into custody Saturday night near his apartment on campus.

Huerta is suspected of posting a message that he would shoot and kill as many people as possible on campus before being killed himself by police, authorities said.

The anonymous threat appeared on a chat board called Juicycampus.com, used primarily by college students.

University officials reported the threat to police around 11:30 a.m. Saturday, said Los Angeles Police Department spokesman Officer Mike Lopez. Calls made to Loyola were not immediately returned.

Officers were dispatched to patrol the campus as a precaution, and campus entrances were restricted.

Investigators working with campus officials were eventually able to determine that the threat had come from the computer registered to Huerta, police said.

There was never an indication the threat made was a valid one, and there is no ongoing threat to LMU, said Deputy Chief Michael Downing, head of the LAPD Counterterrorism and Criminal Intelligence Bureau.

It was not immediately known if Huerta had an attorney.

This is the second time in less than a week that someone has been arrested for allegedly posting an online threat to go on a shooting spree in Los Angeles. Both occurred just days after the mall shooting in Omaha, Nebraska, that left eight holiday shoppers and the gunman dead.

On Friday, an Australian man was arrested after he allegedly posted a message saying a shooting attack would take place at The Grove shopping center near Beverly Hills.

Jarrad Willis, 20, of Melbourne, was arrested after Los Angeles police detectives traced to Australia the address of his Internet provider. Willis has been charged in Australia with creating a false belief — a violation of Australian law.

Arsenal beaten at struggling Boro

posted by admin in cnn, news

LONDON, England — Premier League leaders Arsenal saw their unbeaten run come to a surprise end with a 2-1 defeat at struggling Middlesbrough on Sunday.

Stewart Downing with a fourth minute penalty and Turkish star Tuncay Sanli with 74th minute strike put Boro 2-0 ahead before Tomas Rosicky scored a consolation for the Gunners with the last kick of the match.

Defeat sees Arsenal remain a solitary point ahead of champions Manchester United with 37 points from 16 games. Middlesbrough leap out of the bottom three with their third Premier League victory of the season.

The result capped a miserable two trips to the north-east in five days for the Gunners, who were held 1-1 by Newcastle on Wednesday, and are clearly missing the influential midfielder Cesc Fabregas and other key players.

We lost the game because we deserved to lose it, Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger said. It’s that simple. Middlesbrough were sharper in the fight.

Arsenal had beaten Boro nine times in the last 12 matches but Gareth Southgate’s men began at a high tempo and it paid off as early as the fourth minute when the recalled Gary O’Neil’s ball sent Jeremie Aliadiere into the area and Kolo Toure clumsily brought down his former team-mate, who was going away from goal.

Referee Howard Webb rightly pointed to the spot and Downing applied just enough pace on his penalty to beat Manuel Almunia low to his left.

Arsenal’s top scorer Emmanuel Adebayor went close to a quick equalizer but Middlesbrough could have had a freakish second when William Gallas’ attempted clearance cannoned off Aliadiere but straight to Almunia.

Tuncay missed a great chance to put the home side further ahead five minutes after the restart when Tuncay screwed his shot wide with only Almunia to beat.

Boro were playing the more fluent football and 16 minutes from time scored again. A corner was not cleared properly and O’Neil’s first-time shot was too hot for Almunia, whose parry was powered into the roof of the net by Tuncay, via a slight nick off Gallas.

Boro had the points in the bag long before Rosicky turned in Gael Clichy’s cross deep into stoppage-time.

In other matches on Sunday, substitute Jermaine Defoe scored a late winner as Tottenham eased their relegation fears with a 2-1 win over Manchester City, who stay in sixth.

Defoe struck with seven minutes remaining at White Hart Lane after City’s Rolando Bianchi had canceled out Pascal Chimbonda’s controversial effort with his first goal since August.

Bolton also did their fight against the drop a power of good with a 4-1 home win over fellow strugglers Wigan. French star Nicolas Anelka scored for Bolton but also missed a first half penalty.

Sunday’s late kick off saw Blackburn slip to a 1-0 home defeat to West Ham in a mid-table clash. Fit-again striker Dean Ashton scored a second half winner for the Hammers. E-mail to a friend

Gunman kills 2 at missionary training center

posted by admin in cnn, news

(CNN) — A gunman opened fire Sunday in a training center for young Christian missionaries outside Denver, Colorado, killing two people and wounding two others, police said.

The lone gunman walked into Youth With a Mission, began shooting and then ran away, according to Susan Medina of the Arvada Police Department.

A man and a woman, both in their mid-20s, were killed, Medina said. Two men, ages 22 and 23, were wounded, but Medina would not provide their conditions.

One of the injured men was in critical condition, said Peter Iliyn, regional director for Youth with a Mission.

Peter Warren, the center’s co-founder, said those killed were a woman from Minnesota and a man from Alaska.

These kids were like our kids, you know? he told CNN affiliate KUSA. It’s just such a tragedy.

The center was summoning the 80 or so people who live at the Arvada center to the mountain campus in Golden, near the Golden Gate Canyon State Park.

We’re just going to be honest and pray for one another and cry with one another, Warren told KUSA.

A memorial service for the two would likely be held Tuesday or Wednesday, Warren said.

The names of the victims were being withheld until authorities notified their families, police said.

The gunman was described as a white male, about 20 years old, said Medina. He may be wearing glasses and a dark skull cap or beanie. He also may be sporting a beard or mustache, she said.

Police were using dogs in their search efforts and were hoping the fresh snow outside the building may help them track the suspect, Medina said.

It was unclear how many of those shot were staff members and students, Medina said.

Those not wounded were transported to an off-site location where police are interviewing them, she said.

About 45 people were in the building at the time of the shooting, she said.

The center is home to dozens of young people from all over the world who are training to be Christian missionaries, according to the center’s Web site.

Youth With a Mission was founded in 1960 and operates in 149 countries, according to the organization’s Web site. The organization has a staff of nearly 16,000, the Web site said.

Two reverse 911 calls went out to residents of the neighborhood to let them know a shooting suspect might be in the area, she said.

Medina urged residents to call police if they spot anything suspicious.
