Sizzle - a Great BBQ Book Even Without a BBQ

one of the things i miss most about living in toronto, is my barbecue. we grilled even in the dead of winter. just opened the back door and there it was, no need for a coat even. here in halifax, we’re in a third floor condo with no balcony, no lawn, no barbecue! so why did i put up to understand and communicate with surrounding a book called sizzle - sensational barbecue edibles

by julie biuso?i find out grilled foods, easy to prepare, colorful and pleasing to the respect as well as the tummy and such a in good health way to cook. and i’m on all occasions looking suitable recent recipes. julie, with her umpteen award winning books caught me with the christen and the pleasurable cover….i remember, i know…”don’t weigh a earmark by its cover”, but for me the photos are a critical element in choosing a cookbook. and every one is wonderful. even if there was a dish you might in general exchange your nose up at (like my honey with anchovies and tomatoes), the photos will suck you right in.and this year, first of all with no bbq of my own, i needed to find some dishes that translate from the alfresco grill to being cooked in the kitchen on grill pans or roasted at high heat in the oven. this hard-cover is great by reason of that. in fact, julie actually gives you alternative cooking methods so no guessing is required.in incident, for dinner tonight i chose two colossal dishes that brought some sunshine into a wretched day here in halifax (all in under 30 minutes start to finish).

charred red peppers with anchovies (my honey at the caboodle largely thingummy!)

fish parcels with shallots & tomatoes so rhythmical if you don’t have a barbecue, i make one think you rush out and get this register anyway. it’s lovely. the recipes are obtuse and so flavorful.

Can Obama close the door on Wright?

posted by admin in cnn, news

(CNN) — With less than a week until the next Democratic contests, Sen. Barack Obama is trying to shake off any political damage brought on by the Rev. Jeremiah Wright.

Obama made clear his disgust with Wright’s remarks made Monday at the National Press Club, saying he was outraged and saddened by the spectacle.

What’s unclear is its effect on voters.

The first test will be next Tuesday, when North Carolina and Indiana hold their contests. Recent polls show Obama with a comfortable lead over Sen. Hillary Clinton in North Carolina and a tight race in Indiana.

The days leading up to those contests could indicate if the issue will subside or if Obama has alienated part of his base by separating himself from Wright, analysts say.

Obama had to do it, and had to do it politically. It should satisfy Obama’s supporters, said Mary Frances Berry, a former chairwoman of the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights. We will just have to wait to see if it satisfies people who are not his supporters. Watch how the Wright controversy could affect Obama

Wright has been a respected church leader for decades. The retired pastor of Chicago’s Trinity United Church of Christ was named one of the country’s top black preachers by Ebony magazine in 1993. He’s also played a role in some of the most important events in Obama’s life — performing his marriage and baptizing both of his children.

When some of Wright’s outspoken sermons became an issue in the campaign, Obama denounced the remarks, but said he could not repudiate the man himself.

But Obama’s words Tuesday were not as forgiving.

Some analysts see Obama’s separation from Wright as a political necessity for his White House hopes.

But the Rev. Al Sharpton says Obama’s denouncement doesn’t come without a risk of alienating supporters.

Here’s someone that’s risking knowing that many in his base support group would question him. He doesn’t know what the backlash will be. He doesn’t know what his former pastor is going to say, Sharpton said on CNN’s Larry King Live.

Obama on Tuesday said he was outraged by Wright’s remarks that seemed to suggest the U.S. government might be responsible for the spread of AIDS among African-Americans and his equation of U.S. wartime efforts with terrorism. Watch what experts say about Obama’s response

CNN’s Candy Crowley, who was in the front row while Obama was talking, said Obama exuded sadness. But when the topic turned to Wright’s suggestion that Obama denounced him for political reasons, Obama was seething, Crowley said.

There was definitely a Barack Obama I had not seen in this news conference, she said.

Obama suggested Tuesday that his relationship with Wright was changed forever.

There’s been great damage, he said. It may have been unintentional on his part, but I do not see that relationship being the same after this.

Perhaps onlookers were surprised by Obama’s harsh words, but Wright predicted such an outcome in an interview in The New York Times more than a year ago.

If Barack gets past the primary, he might have to publicly distance himself from me, Wright told the newspaper in April 2007. I said it to Barack personally, and he said, ‘Yeah, that might have to happen.’

Obama must now move on, said David Gergen, a former presidential adviser and CNN contributor. There ought to be a group of his supporters, many of whom are black, who ought to be prepared now to speak out.

If Jeremiah Wright returns fire, they ought to be the ones who come out and handle that, put him in his place, say how destructive this is and how contradictory it is, Gergen said.

But Berry said the last thing Obama needs is black preachers attacking Wright, because there will be another sizable group of black preachers who will get up and defend Rev. Wright.

And then you’ll have it still be all about race. And it will be about race, race, race endlessly. And what Obama wants to do is get beyond the discussion of race, she said.

Ed Rollins, a veteran Republican strategist, said if the election ends up being about race, Obama cannot win.

He’s got to get back on his message and convince white voters, in addition to African-American voters, that he represents them all and represents their values, he said.

But getting back to the issues could prove difficult if Wright chooses to make a public response.

Obama said Wright’s performance showed a complete disregard for what the American people are going through. Watch Obama describe Wright’s comments

Now is the time for us to not to get distracted. Now is the time for us to pull tighter, and that’s what we’ve been doing in this campaign, and you know, there was a sense that that did not matter to Rev. Wright. What mattered was him commanding center stage, Obama said.

As he tries to reclaim his campaign, Obama said time will tell how the Wright fallout will play out on the trail.

Obviously we’ve got elections in four or five days. So we’ll find out, you know, what impact it has, Obama said.

Blaine sets breath-holding record on ‘Oprah’

posted by admin in cnn, news

CHICAGO, Illinois (AP) — David Blaine set a new world record Wednesday for breath-holding, 17 minutes and 4 seconds.

The feat was broadcast live during The Oprah Winfrey Show and the studio audience cheered as divers pulled the 35-year-old magician from a water-filled sphere.

Blaine looked relaxed afterward and said the record was a lifelong dream.

The previous record was 16 minutes and 32 seconds, set February 10 by Switzerland’s Peter Colat, according to Guinness World Records.

Before he entered the sphere, Blaine inhaled pure oxygen through a mask to saturate his blood with oxygen and flush out carbon dioxide.

Guinness says up to 30 minutes of so-called oxygen hyperventilation is allowed under its guidelines.

Previously, Blaine was buried alive for a week in a see-through coffin in New York and spent more than a month suspended from a glass box by the River Thames in London.

Even though Blaine has sometimes attracted thousands of spectators to what he likes to think of as his performance pieces, he told The Associated Press on Tuesday that it will be a challenge to break a record requiring him to remain still and calm amid the hubbub of a live studio audience.

Still, he said, the crowds have always contributed to his success.

When you commit to it and there’s people watching, you kind of have to stick to it. You can’t back out, you can’t fade away and you can’t cheat, he said.

If I was doing it alone, I’d probably be off sneaking out of the box in London or grabbing some food, he said with a laugh, speaking in a conference room in a Harpo Productions building a couple blocks from Winfrey’s television studio.

Through nutrition, light cardio workouts and cutting out alcohol and caffeine Blaine said he’s been able to lower his resting heart rate to about 38 beats per minute, similar to that seen in highly conditioned endurance-trained athletes. E-mail to a friend

Prince William makes secret Afghan trip

posted by admin in cnn, news

LONDON, England (CNN) — Britain’s Prince William, who has faced criticism for misusing military helicopters, made a surprise visit to Afghanistan this week serving as part of an air crew that made the 30-hour trip from England.

A royal spokesman said William, who caused an uproar when he used a Royal Air Force helicopter to drop in at his girlfriend’s house this month, piloted a military C-17 transport aircraft during part of his Sunday flight to Kandahar.

The 25-year-old, second in line to the throne, spent about three hours on the ground and was briefed on British military operations in Afghanistan, the spokesman said.

He then traveled to Ubeid Air Base in Qatar, where he spent two hours before flying back to England.

News of the Prince’s visit was delayed as it was classified as confidential, the UK Press Association reported Tuesday.

However, William’s trip has been criticized by some who see it as a public relations exercise to reduce the damage caused to the popular Prince’s image by his earlier flying indiscretions.

There is an element of risk but there would be no way security officials would allow it to happen… It would be pretty well sterile while he was there, former royal protection officer Ken Wharfe told the Press Association.

I’m slightly skeptical about this. I think the cynics amongst us will say it’s an attempt to cover up the Chinook jollies.

Publicist Max Clifford agreed, telling the BBC the trip would get them some good headlines.

William’s trip came nearly two months after his younger brother, Harry, ended a three-month army tour in Afghanistan.

Prince Harry was forced to cut his tour short by several weeks after a U.S. Web site published news that he was serving there with Britain’s Household Cavalry Regiment Battlegroup.

The British and international media had observed a blackout on the news for security reasons.

William, a second lieutenant in the British army, received his pilot’s wings from the RAF earlier this month.

His four-month attachment with the RAF was designed to give the presumed future king knowledge about Britain’s branches of the military.

However, one of his training flights led to controversy when tabloid the News of the World reported on April 20 that he landed a Chinook helicopter — normally used for transporting troops — in a field next to the home of his girlfriend Kate Middleton.

It also emerged that William used the expensive helicopter — which is said to cost $30,000 an hour to run — to twice fly over the home of his father Prince Charles and to fly to a wedding party. He also flew over the Norfolk residence of his grandmother Queen Elizabeth and went to the Isle of Wight for the stag weekend of his cousin Peter Phillips, The Telegraph reported.

Prince William is expected to complete an attachment with the Royal Navy later this year.

Facebook infidelity?

I had a nasty shock when I sat down at my computer to write my blog today. Jeffrey must have left it on overnight, which is not like him.

It was open on the “i’m huq’d on konnie huq” (sic) fan group page of a website called Facebook. It took me a little while to get my bearings, but it appeared that Jeffrey was a “member” of the group.

I didn’t even know that Jeffrey was a member of Facebook. I’ve read about it in the newspaper, so I know it’s a website that can be used to “cyber stalk” people, “poke” people (whatever that means) or organise for rampaging hordes to gatecrash teenage parties.
