Crash survivor: God ’still has work for us to do’

posted by admin in cnn, news

(CNN) — A missionary family from Minnesota is glad to be alive and together after surviving a plane crash in the Democratic Republic of Congo, the father said Wednesday.

Barry and Marybeth Mosier were on their way to visit their son Keith, 24, in Kinsangani, Congo, with two younger children when their plane crashed on takeoff Tuesday in Goma. At least 36 people died as the plane plowed through a market and burned. Most of the people who died were on the ground, according to the U.N. mission in DR Congo.

April Mosier, 14, managed to escape the plane quickly, her father said by phone from Goma.

April raced ahead, and she got to the front of the plane as one of the first people, I think, said Barry Mosier, 53.

The girl encountered a man who was tearing through an opening in the fuselage, Mosier said.

He was pulling parts of the plane in or pushing them out, trying to make a hole. And she told him — she speaks Swahili well — she said, ‘We’ve got to get a hole in this plane or we’re all going to die.’ Watch as Barry Mosier describes the chaos

When the hole was big enough, April tried to dive through it. She made it with a push from the man, and other passengers followed, he said.

Meanwhile, Mosier said he and his wife were carrying their son Andrew, 3, forward in the shoving mass of humanity trying to escape the burning plane. They got out through the opening in the fuselage. The child’s leg was broken in the crush of people, but his parents didn’t realize it until later.

April became separated from her parents and was whisked away to a hospital, convinced her family was dead, her father said.

Outside the plane she was wandering around. … It was total chaos, he said. People were screaming and yelling because the plane had landed on this market. All of a sudden out of the blue all of these people who were just standing there are now dead.

So there’s parts of bodies, and people burning, and people screaming and yelling, and she was out there by herself.

About 25 minutes later, the Mosiers were reunited at the hospital.

When we saw each other at the hospital, I can tell you it was a grand reunion, he said.

The Mosiers, who have been Seventh-day Adventist missionaries in Iringa, Tanzania, for eight years, went to the church office in Goma to let Keith and other loved ones — including two other grown children in the U.S. — know they were all right.

While there, someone noticed Andrew’s leg was swollen, and the Mosiers returned to the hospital. They learned that Andrew’s femur was broken near the hip, and he is now in a cast that reaches from his toes to his rib cage, Barry Mosier said.

He doesn’t like it very well, as most 3-year-olds wouldn’t, Mosier said.

The family will recuperate in Goma for a few days before deciding whether to resume the trip to Kisangani, where Keith Mosier has been a volunteer missionary for two months, Barry Mosier said.

But flying here is not a popular thing to talk about just now, he said wryly.

Andrew has made up his mind, his father said.

He says he doesn’t want to ride in airplanes anymore, he said.

Marybeth Mosier, 51, suffered a black eye and bruised ribs, said her husband, who added that he was unhurt.

We couldn’t believe that our family of four could all escape a plane that was crashed and on fire, but by God’s mercy we did, he said.

Mosier said he believes the family made it for a reason.

I think the Lord has a plan for us, otherwise we wouldn’t have survived, he said. He still has work for us to do.

And that work just might be in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

We actually came here with the idea of seeing if we could move here to Congo, so it’s been kind of a rough introduction, Mosier said.

I think we’ll keep praying about that. We know that the safest place in the world to work is where the Lord wants you to work.

Pirates held for questioning in Paris

posted by admin in cnn, news

PARIS, France (CNN) — Six pirates who hijacked a French luxury yacht off the coast of Somalia are now in custody in France, a diplomatic official said Wednesday.

The six men are being held at the Paris court where they are being questioned, said an official from the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs who did not want to be named.

The case is now a matter for the Justice Ministry, the official said, and no charges have been filed yet.

The French military captured the six pirates in a dramatic chase through the Somalian desert as they tried to make their escape.

The pirates had just released the 30 hostages from the yacht and were trying to make off with ransom money when the military caught up with them on the African mainland.

French helicopter gunships shot at the pirates’ cars, disabling one of them. When the pirates then tried to escape on foot, the military gave chase and apprehended them. Watch the pirates being chased down

It was not clear when the pirates arrived in France. They had been held on a French warship in the region while the French government decided whether to bring them to Paris for trial.

More than a dozen pirates seized the yacht Le Ponant on April 4 off the coast of Somalia and held it and its 30-member crew hostage for a week. No passengers were on board.

It was unclear how many pirates remained on the loose. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs official said the government believed between 12 and 15 pirates were involved in the hijacking.

The hostages were freed following negotiations between the pirates and the French government, and arrived back in France this week. Watch the freed captives arrive on a ship

Though they weren’t harmed, the crew members said they were constantly afraid they would be. One unidentified crew member — a waiter aboard the yacht — said the captain tried to hide female crew members out of fear the pirates might rape them.

We were afraid that they were going to touch the girls, said the unnamed man, interviewed by the French military. So the captain just gave protection for them.

French media have reported payment of a $2 million ransom, which the ship’s French owners have neither confirmed nor denied. The French government says no public money was involved.

My Thoughts On The 27th Hong Kong Film Awards

though i didn’t get to catch the endure telecast of the 27th hong kong skin awards, i was eagerly following the results on yahoo! hong kong. so here are some compendium thoughts on the results. (list from lovehkfilm.com)kindest picture

champion: the warlordsnominees: look at in the azure overly, meshuga detective, the postmodern life of my aunt, protégéthoughts: bigger isn’t like it better, so i’m a thimbleful underwhelmed that the uneven the warlords got the big award over mad detective. sure, it had shocking performance values, the battle scenes were gargantuan, but once the film shifted to character drama, it undeniably was kinda weak. largest leader
winner: peter chan ho-sun (the warlords)nominees:yau nai-hoi (eye in the sky), johnnie to kei-fung, wai ka-fai (mad detective), ann hui on-wah (the postmodern life of my aunt), derek yee tung-pipe (protégé) thoughts: i like peter chan as a filmmaker a lot, i like comrades: almost a love story and perhaps love (more than most people do, i think), but i in point of fact find warlords a lesser piece of work compared to the previous two. but it’s undeniable that the staging of the campaign fight setpieces was awesome. obviously, my picked film of them all was mad detective.best actorwinner: jet li (the warlords)nominees: aaron kwok fu-sing (the detective), simon yam tat-wah (eye in the sky), lau ching-wan (mad detective), andy lau tak-wah (the warlords) thoughts: huh. didn’t expect this. was thinking that lau ching wan would win his second consecutive award (probably never happened in hk film awarding history before), or that aaron kwok disposition finally around b be socially active something. i personally thought aaron’s performance in the detective is better than jet li’s in the warlords. i’m befuddled by andy and simon’s nominations. simon is not to say better in exodus, and he really had simply a supporting role in eye in the sky. as for andy lau, i felt that he was serviceable, but slightly out of place in the warlords.
jet li didn’t know that he had won the award even when they announced his name
best actresswinner: siqin gaowa (the postmodern life of my aunt)nominees:rene liu (kidnap), teresa mo Brummagem-kwan (mr. cinema), zhang jingchu (protégé), charlene choi cheuk-yin (simply actors) thoughts: definitely the rightful winner of the award. her performance in the postmodern ?lan vital of my aunt elevated the show.
siqin gaowa accepting her awarding
best supporting actor

winner: andy lau tak-wah (protégé)
nominees:- go cheung ka-fai (exodus), ronald cheng chung-kei (mr. cinema), chow yun-fat (the postmodern life of my aunt), louis koo tin-lok (protégé) thoughts: yeah, andy lau’s performance in protégé is one of the highlights of the show. but that could’ve happened solely because he’s andy lau. i’m dispassionate with him winning, i wouldn’t attend ignore nick cheung bewitching in the service of exodus though. his language-laced statement in the police station is one of the most historic scenes of the film.best supporting actress
winner: siu yam-yam (the pye-dog)nominees:maggie siu mei-kei (eye in the sky), karen mok man-wai (mr. cinema), vicki zhao wei (the postmodern life of my aunt), anita yuen wing-yee (protégé) thoughts: haven’t watched the pye-dog, wiil do so rhyme of these nights. but i think maggie siu and vicki zhao were good in their roles. (the latter was a surprise in the postmodern life of my aunt, i’ve been too employed to see her in horrible films, or churning for all to see sub-par performances)best screenplay prizewinner: wai ka-fai, au agnate-yee (mad detective)

Olympic torch tours pro-China Pakistan

posted by admin in cnn, news

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan (AP) — Pakistan has welcomed the Olympic torch for what its pro-China government hopes will be a festive and trouble-free leg of its world tour.

Protests against China’s human rights record have marred the torch’s passage through Western cities, and Pakistan has gone to great lengths to avoid any repeat during its short stay en route to Beijing.

A plane bringing the torch from Oman arrived at the military section of Islamabad airport shortly after midnight Wednesday.

Later Wednesday, about 60 Pakistani athletes will take turns to carry it to a ceremony featuring folk music and dancing at the city’s biggest sports complex before guests including President Pervez Musharraf. E-mail to a friend
