Kim Ju-yeon and Hwang Jae-won Scandal

Kim Ju-yeon (24), former Miss Korea 2007, and Hwang Jae-won (27), a football player for the Pohang Steelers, are having a baby, but Hwang doesn’t want it. Kim presented text messages to the media at a press conference she alleges were from Hwang saying, “erase (abort) before things get too difficult.” Kim says Hwang wants her to have an abortion. As we’ve seen so many times before, text messages are easy to fake. A voicemail would be much more believable. Hwang denies sending the text messaes. Airing dirty laundry in front of the media for the world to see, is the act of a desperate woman, who has been rejected by a man she is obsessing over. Pathetic. Things like this should be kept private. Don’t let the tears fool you. Kim’s family is probably in hiding after this public embarassment. Kim should ask Hwang to support the baby, and be part of the baby’s life, but that doesn’t mean she can use the baby to trap him into a relationship. Bayern a point away from Bundesliga title

MUNICH, Germany — Two goals from Franck Ribery helped Bayern Munich beat champions Stuttgart 4-1 on Sunday to move 12 points clear in the Bundesliga with just one point required from their last four games to seal a 21st German title.

Luca Toni scored his 36th goal in only 42 matches in the eighth minute and, although Antonio da Silva equalised nine minutes later, Mark van Bommel fired in a superb low free-kick that curled around the wall in the 55th minute to make it 2-1.

Bayern coach Ottmar Hitzfeld had rested Ribery along with four other first team players ahead of Thursday’s UEFA Cup semifinal second leg at Zenit St Petersburg.

However, Hitzfeld sent him on as a 57th minute substitute and the playmaker scored twice within two minutes.

The Frenchman blasted a spectacular long-range shot into the top right corner beyond the fingertips of keeper Raphael Schaefer in the 75th minute and then beat two Stuttgart defenders before firing in a crisp shot with his weaker left foot.

Hitzfeld made it clear that reaching the UEFA Cup final was the top priority with the Bundesliga all but wrapped up. I’m glad I rested Ribery. He was hugely motivated when he came off the bench, he said.

Bayern, who drew 1-1 at home to Zenit last week and won the German Cup a week last Saturday, now lead the Bundesliga with 66 points. It’s good we didn’t clinch the title now because there would have been too much celebrating and we wouldn’t have been able to concentrate on the hard match at St Petersburg, said chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge.

Werder Bremen are second on 54 points after losing ground on Saturday with a 3-3 draw at Karlsruhe, while Schalke are third, also with 54 points, after beating Hamburg 1-0 on Saturday.

Hitzfeld admitted it was hard to imagine Bayern squandering the title now with a 12-point lead and four matches left — along with a superior 20-goal advantage over Bremen.

The team showed a lot of character once again, said Hitzfeld. We believe we can win every match with five or six fresh players coming in. We would be on our last legs if we had to play so many matches with the same 11 players.

Chevolution, Tribeca Film Festival

Using a Leica M2 with a 90mm lens, Cuban photographer Alberto “Korda” Díaz snapped the iconic photograph of Ernesto “Che” Guevara during a mass funeral for the victims of a mysterious series of explosions in Havana harbor that killed at least 75 people 1960. The service was held the day after the tragedy, and Korda, who was Castro’s official photographer at the time, managed two photos of Guevara as he briefly stepped onstage to look out at the mourners. Korda later said that Che’s countenance was one of “absolute implacability, anger, and pain.”

A new documentary, Chevolution, provides an absorbing and thorough study of Korda, his photograph, and its eventual devolution into a ubiquitous fashion accessory. Directors Trisha Ziff and Luis Lopez go to Cuba to talk to Korda’s surviving friends and his daughter, who spends her days suing corporations who use the image for advertising. Korda never received any royalties from the photo but he did successfully sue Smirnoff in the 90s for using the image. He donated the $50,000 settlement to the Cuban healthcare system, saying:

i am not averse to its reproduction by those who wish to propagate his tribute and the cause of social justice throughout the over the moon marvellous, but i am categorically against the exploitation of che’s archetype for the promotion of products such as alcohol, or for any purpose that denigrates the reputation of che.

Chevolution artfully balances arresting archival footage with contemporary interviews with historians, artists like Shephard Fairey, and even Che-loathing Cuban refugees, turning what could have been a knee-jerk exercise into a wide-angle analysis of how a revolutionary figure became a universal logo. One of the film’s most interesting revelations is that for seven years Korda’s image went nowhere, displayed only on the wall of his studio, until he gave two prints to Italian publisher Giangiacomo Feltrinelli, who widely disseminated it throughout Europe on posters. That was the 60s for you; were the photo taken today, it would probably be a YouTube meme in minutes. Chevolution is screening as part of the Tribeca Film Festival; showtimes here.

Hirvonen victory puts him back on top

AMMAN, Jordan — Finn Mikko Hirvonen returned to first place in the world standings by winning the Rally of Jordan, the fifth of the 15-race world rally championship series.

The 27-year-old Ford Focus driver finished one minute 15 seconds ahead of the Citroen C4 of overnight leader Dani Sordo of Spain.

It is the fifth victory for Hirvonen after wins in Australia in 2006 and Norway, Japan and Britain in 2007. However, it was his first this season.

Australia’s Chris Atkinson finished third in his Subaru Impreza, his fourth podium in five races this season.

World champion Sebastien Loeb’s chances of winning the event were effectively ended after a head-on collision on the 11th stage on Saturday.

Frenchman Loeb started Sunday in 20th position but managed to finish the race in 10th place. However, the result means he slips into second in the overall standings.

Elsewhere, Norway’s Henning Solberg was fourth, with Britain’s Matthew Wilson in fifth and Argentine Federico Villagra claiming sixth. E-mail to a friend
