LitTO: April 29May 7

This week internationally acclaimed author Maggie Helwig launches her new novel Girls Fall Down (Coach House Books) at the Toronto Women’s Bookstore (73 Harbord Street). Torontoist is always happy to see local writers using Toronto as a setting for novels and Helwig doesn’t disappoint. In her rendering a biological outbreak on the TTC sends the city into a panic, as stricken citizens are collapsing in subways and streetcars all over Toronto. After this past weekend’s public transit chaos, perhaps Helwig’s apocalyptic vision is just what we need to put things in perspective?

Helwig’s reading will be followed by a question and answer session moderated by the always charming Zoe Whittall of Bottle Rocket Hearts fame. It all happens Thursday at 7 p.m.

Lovers of speculative fiction will be pleased to hear that the Toronto Public Library is taking a bold stance against genre snobbery and programming a massive SF reading and workshop series across Toronto until the end of May. Toronto is actually renowned for producing some of the finest science fiction writers the world has to offer, but the city’s general inability to recognize the genre as a valid one means that local talent doesn’t get that much recognition here at home. Foresight: Speculative Fiction in Canada aims to change that.

Scheduling innovative, edgy writers like Emily Pohl-Weary (Strange Times at Western High), Paul Hong (Your Love is Murder, or the Case of the Mangled Pie), Nalo Hopkinson (The New Moon’s Arms), Sandra Kasturi (The Animal Bridegroom), and Kristyn Dunnion (Big Big Sky), Forsight is successfuly revamping genre fiction’s geeky fringe image. It’s a great opportunity to get to know some writers you may have overlooked because they weren’t sanctioned by the literati, and learn a thing or two. You can find the full schedule here.

If you’re interested in something different this evening, the first installment of brand new reading series Fascination Street will be happening at the Augusta House in Kensington market. Inspired by the likes of Bukowski, Ginsberg, Patti Smith, Antonin Artaud, and Lydia Lunch, this night is looking to establish a platform for spoken word that operates outside of the average literary reading. The evening includes Demian Carynnyk, Sandra Kasturi, Kristen McGregor, Brett Alexander Savory, and others, and kicks off at 7:30 p.m.

Full listings after the fold.

Cavendish claims Romandie prologue win

posted by admin in cnn, news

GENEVA, Switzerland (AP) — Mark Cavendish of Britain overcame a blustery breeze off Lake Geneva to win the prologue to the six-day Tour de Romandie on Tuesday.

The 22-year-old track world champion completed the 1.9-kilometer circuit of the lakeside road in 2 minutes, 7.60 seconds, 0.27 seconds ahead of Daniele Bennati of Italy.

I think the wind was coming from the lake but with the buildings it creates circles and it is quite hard, Cavendish, a sprint specialist, said.

When there is a prologue so short it is always good for me to come. The rest of the race is going to be really hard for me.

Michael Albasini of Switzerland, a Liquigas teammate of Bennati, was third in 2:08.20.

Bradley Wiggins of Britain, Cavendish’s Team High Road teammate, was fifth, 1 second behind.

Cavendish and Wiggins teamed up to win the madison at the track worlds in Manchester last month, and will aim to win gold at the Beijing Olympics in August.

The Olympics is a big priority, but my career is on the road and my job is to win races for High Road, said Cavendish, who had no expectations of hanging on to his lead Wednesday.

The field of 150 riders in 19 teams have a further 656 kilometers of countryside to cover in the French-speaking western part of Switzerland.

Stage one of the UCI Pro Tour event winds 185 kilometers from Morges to Saignelegier.

Race favorites expected to emerge include defending champion Thomas Dekker from the Netherlands, ninth in the prologue, Andreas Kloeden of Germany and Oscar Pereiro of Spain, the 2006 Tour de France winner.

The race ends Sunday in the Olympic Stadium, Lausanne, after a 154-kilometer road stage. E-mail to a friend

‘Major review’ for A380 deliveries

posted by admin in cnn, news

PARIS, France (AP) — Airbus said Tuesday that the European planemaker is conducting a major review of its planned delivery schedule for its A380 superjumbo, which has been plagued by past delays.

Speaking at a company site in the United Arab Emirates, CEO Thomas Enders was quoted by a spokesman as acknowledging that reaching Airbus’ goal of delivering four A380s per month by 2010 won’t be easy.

We’re currently conducting a major review of the superjumbo program, Enders said at the opening of an Airbus material and logistics center in Dubai, headquarters of A380 customer Emirates Airlines.

His comments were relayed by Airbus spokesman Stefan Schaffrath. The spokesman withdrew earlier comments saying Airbus is confident more than ever about the program that he had attributed to Enders.

Airbus has previously said it is committed to handing over 13 A380s in 2008, 25 in 2009, and 45 in 2010.

The A380 is in the critical phase of steep production ramp-up as Airbus switches from an individualized — or haute couture — approach to full industrialization, Schaffrath said.

Airbus is reviewing whether workers and suppliers are ready for the change, and whether the delivery schedule can be maintained, Schaffrath said.

The review is standard practice at this stage in the plane’s development, he said.

Any uncertainty might not go down well with Airbus’ existing customers for the A380, whose patience has already been stretched, nor with potential converts.

The planemaker has already been hit with penalties for late delivery of the A380, which, combined with spiraling development costs, wiped billions of dollars off profits.

Enders said in October that increasing A380 production is Airbus’ greatest challenge for the coming years. The workload of making one A380 is equivalent to eight of the single-aisle A320, Airbus’ most popular jet.

Also Tuesday, Airbus announced that Tunisair has ordered 16 new jetliners from the European planemaker.

Airbus said in a statement that the letter of acceptance from the Tunisian carrier covers the purchase of 10 single-aisle A320s, three wide-body A330s and three of the revamped, long-range A350 XWBs.

Airbus did not provide a value for the deal. Based on list prices, the deal would be worth about $1.94 billion — though airlines often negotiate substantial discounts.

The announcement came on the second day of a state visit by French President Nicolas Sarkozy to Tunisia.

Shares of EADS, Airbus’ parent company, rose 0.7 percent to 15.80 euros ($24.70) in afternoon Paris trading.
