Ferguson: Ronaldo staying at Old Trafford

posted by admin in cnn, news

(CNN) — Manchester United manager Alex Ferguson says Cristiano Ronaldo will be staying at the newly-crowned European champions despite being publicly courted by Spanish giants Real Madrid.

Ferguson has been irritated by questions about the Portuguese star’s future and used Friday’s post-Champions League media conference to spell out his determination to keep him at Old Trafford.

When you want to keep someone you work hard to do it, he told the Press Association.

That is a fact not lost on Manchester United but it is a fact not lost on Real Madrid either.

We sold them Ruud van Nistelrooy and David Beckham because we wanted to.

Ferguson’s comments were clearly aimed at Real’s German coach Bernd Schuster and club president Ramon Calderon who said that United trying to hold on to Ronaldo against his will is akin to slavery.

The remarks drew a ferocious response from Ferguson who said Real had no morals in their dealings.

You get used to the way Madrid perform in these things, he said.

The simple facts are (Ronaldo) has another four years left on his contract. That is the first thing.

And Calderon makes that great statement that slavery was abolished many, many years ago. Did they tell Franco that? Give me a break.

Schuster also told Spanish television channel Noticias Cuatro: Sooner or later, Cristiano Ronaldo will wear the white shirt. I hope that it is when I am still at the club.

He added: If there is any chance of signing him, Real Madrid have to try it.

The speculation stepped up after Ronaldo, who scored in Wednesday’s final against Chelsea but also missed a penalty in the shootout, appeared to leave open the possibility of a move to Real when questioned by reporters.

Thousands flee South African violence

posted by admin in cnn, news

JOHANNESBURG, South Africa — Mozambique has declared a state of emergency in a bid to assist thousands of citizens trying to escape continuing xenophobic attacks in neighboring South Africa.

The country’s Foreign Minister Oldemiro Baloi said on Friday the decision was taken after about 10,000 Mozambicans fled from South Africa, where the violence has left more than 40 dead.

And he said the exodus will worsen as thousands more try to find transport back to Mozambique, according to The Associated Press.

South African police spokesman Sally de Beer said sporadic incidents were reported across the country, including Cape Town and in and around Durban.

She was speaking the day after police and military units raided three hostels in a clampdown on the violence.

Twenty-eight people were arrested in the extremely successful first joint operation, according to a statement from the South African police and South African National Defence Force.

The statement said 150 kilograms (330.6 pounds) of marijuana was seized along with firearms, ammunition and suspected stolen property.

Two of the hostels raided were in Jeppe and the third was in Cleveland, all in the Johannesburg area.

South African President Thabo Mbeki approved the deployment of the army Wednesday to help stop the attacks, which have drawn condemnation from South African officials and other African leaders.

Police said 42 people have been killed in the violence, which began last week in Johannesburg’s Alexandra Township and has been concentrated in the city’s poorest areas.

Some 28,000 people have been displaced by the violence, Hangwani Malaudzi, a spokesman for the Ministry of Safety and Security said. And more than 400 have been arrested for crimes ranging from murder, to causing a public disturbance, he said.

The country has also seen a disturbing throwback to the 1980s apartheid-era lynching tactic of necklacing, which was widely used in the townships at the time.

Used on suspected informants, the necklace is a car tire, filled with petrol, put around the person’s neck and set alight.

The victims are mainly immigrants and refugees from other parts of Africa, including Zimbabwe, where a devastated economy has sent at least two million people across the border in search of a better life.

Some say the attacks stem from a long-standing feeling among locals that the number of immigrants in South Africa results in shortages of jobs and essential needs.

Inadequate housing, a lack of running water and electricity, the rising prices of food, and escalating crime — nearly 20,000 people were slain in South Africa last year — add to the resentment. Watch analysis of reasons behind xenophobic attacks

South Africa’s army has been patrolling riot-hit townships to restore calm as the country counts the cost of the xenophobic attacks.

Brigadier General Kwena Mangope of the South African Department of Defense said troops were assisting the South African Police Service, the national police.

We are in a supporting role, Mangope said. We are not taking over the operation.

He said the army was providing troops and equipment, such as helicopters and tents.

The deployment of the military and the continued operations of the police service helped quell the violence, Malaudzi said. Community groups, churches, and communication between police and affected communities also helped the situation, he said.

The message is going out there to say we condemn this kind of action, and (to) those that are involved in instigating this violence, the law is going to come down on them very, very seriously, Malaudzi said.

According to South Africa’s latest census, the country has about 45 million people. The South African Department of Human Affairs estimates that more than 4 million people reside in South Africa illegally, but that figure is based on a 10-year-old study and some feel the number of immigrants in South Africa is much higher.

Some say that millions have recently fled to South Africa from Zimbabwe because of violence there since the county’s stalled election.

Lalit Modi: Cricket’s billion-dollar brain

posted by admin in cnn, news

(CNN) — Former England cricket captain Michael Atherton has called him ruthless, but for Lalit Modi, the man behind cricket’s revolutionary Indian Premier League and vice-president of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), this is less of a criticism and more a statement of fact.

I am ruthless, without doubt, he told CNN’s Talk Asia in Mumbai.

Otherwise we wouldn’t get where we were. Many believe that Modi, 44, has taken cricket into a new era, turning a sport that can be baffling to watch and take five days to play, into a brightly-colored instant hit of action taking just a few hours.

With cheerleaders, the best players in the world and even Bollywood stars as part owners of some of the teams, Modi has concocted a recipe fit for prime-time TV consumption, in a country renown for its passion for the game.

Modi’s came up with the idea of a new Indian cricket league came 14 years ago, but resisted the involvement of the BBCI at that time, citing too many vested interested within India’s main cricketing body that would have spoiled his ideas.

While ruthless he is also astute to the financial potential of cricket in India and the IPL.

After graduating from Duke University in the U.S. in sports management he returned to India to launch ESPN and 10 Sports.

Coming from a family that controls Modi Enterprise, an industrial conglomerate worth $1.5 billion, Modi admits his family were concerned that he was moving away from business and spending so much time with cricket while setting up the IPL.

They didn’t think that I’ll be spending so much time with cricket, and cricket has taken up so much time of my time, but the job has made it so demanding. Either I do it well, and if I do it well then I need to give the time for it, he told CNN.

It’s been time well spent, both professionally and personally: Modi has his own private jet, gets mobbed in the streets by fans and can hang out with Bollywood stars.

Yet he hasn’t made a fortune from the IPL: I have an honorary position and BCCI is a charity and a trust. It’s a nonprofit-making organization and we do this for development of the game and I’m passionate about the game.
