Cannavaro has operation on ankle injury

posted by admin in cnn, news

VIENNA, Austria (AP) — Italy captain Fabio Cannavaro had surgery on his left ankle on Wednesday and is expected to be back in action in two months.

The operation lasted a half-hour and Cannavaro was calm and smiling afterwards, the Italian football federation said.

Cannavaro tore ligaments in Italy’s first training session at the European Championships on Monday as he collided with fellow- defender Giorgio Chiellini.

The operation was performed at the Pelikangasse private clinic in Vienna, under supervision of Italy team physician Andrea Ferretti, with assistance by another Italian doctor and Real Madrid’s physician.

Everything went well and as we expected, Ferretti said. The injury was exactly what we thought. He should be able to play again in two months and start the season with Real Madrid.

Space station toilet trouble fixed

posted by admin in cnn, news

HOUSTON, Texas (AP) — The international space station’s toilet trouble appeared to be taken care of Wednesday after a Russian cosmonaut replaced a malfunctioning pump.

The space station’s toilet broke two weeks ago.

The problem — confined to the urine side of the commode — forced the orbiting outpost’s crew of an American astronaut and two Russian cosmonauts to flush manually with extra water several times a day.

Space shuttle Discovery brought up a new pump for the toilet, as well as the space station’s newest room, a $1 billion Japanese lab.

Oleg Kononenko spent more than two hours installing the new 35-pound pump and hoses, then running three tests of the toilet while he talked with specialists at Russian Mission Control, located just outside of Moscow.

The toilet worked normally. It transports urine via air flow to the pump, which separates the gas and liquid.

Let’s start using it, Russian Mission Control told Kononenko, one of the two Russians living aboard the space station. We’ll keep our fingers crossed.

Kononenko was asked to give periodic reports on how the toilet was working.

While Kononenko fixed the toilet, other members of the shuttle and space station crews were busy making power, data, air and water connections on the newly installed lab, named Kibo, which means hope in Japanese.

Japanese astronaut Akihiko Hoshide installed the 37-foot lab on Tuesday, just as two crewmates were completing a spacewalk. Watch the spacewalk

He used the space station’s robot arm to nudge the bus-sized lab into place.

On Wednesday, Hoshide will get to turn the module on for the first time. That will be really exciting, said Emily Nelson, a space station flight director.

Later in the day, the 10 space fliers on the linked shuttle and station planned to open the doors to the lab and float in.

The long process of installing Kibo began with a spacewalk by Michael Fossum and Ronald Garan Jr. They removed covers and disconnected cables, then handed off to the robot arm-operators inside, who lifted the lab out of Discovery’s payload bay and attached it to the space station.

The Japanese lab is bigger and more sophisticated than the two other labs at the space station. It sports a hatch to the outside and a robot arm for sliding out science experiments. A smaller arm will arrive next spring, along with an outdoor porch for holding the experiment packages.

The first part of Kibo — essentially a storage shed — was delivered by the last shuttle crew in March. The astronauts aboard the linked shuttle and station will attach the shed to the lab on Friday.

The lab work was just part of Tuesday’s spacewalk, the first of three planned for Discovery’s nine-day space station visit. Watch the astronauts work inside the shuttle

Fossum and Garan also helped remove a 50-foot shuttle inspection boom from the space station and get it back to Discovery. The boom, usually attached to the shuttle’s robotic arm and used to conduct a detailed inspection of the spacecraft’s wings and nose, was checked out Wednesday and its sensors appeared to be working properly.

The spacewalkers also worked on the station’s jammed solar wing rotating joint. Fossum tried out some cleaning techniques on the joint, which is gummed up with metal shavings, while Garan put in a new bearing.

How to Post to Two Separate Del.icio.us Accounts Easily

Salmonella outbreak

If you maintain two separate del.icio.us accounts (one personal account and one for a business or web site), you know how difficult del.icio.us can be to use if you are having to switch usernames all of the time. Essentially, everytime you want to post a site to the other del.icio.us account you have to logoff, and enter your other username and password.

i know what you are thoughtful:

But you aren’t supposed to use del.icio.us like that. Just create one account and tag personal stuff as personal and business/site stuff as business.

I think there are some good reasons for having separate del.icio.us accounts. For example, if your del.icio.us links are recommendations to your users/readers, you might not want them to think you are endorsing all of the crazy sites you post to your personal account. No matter whether or not your reasons for having two del.icio.us accounts are ‘good’ reasons, maintaining two accounts is cumbersome if you don’t have some good tools. To overcome the nuisance of re-logging into del.icio.us all of the time, I have devised this simple “hack” (if you will). Ok, so it’s not really a hack, but let’s just pretend.

there are multiple firefox extensions for del.icio.us, and if you have two del.icio.us extensions installed you can set them to fill someone in on to personal accounts. so, simply place:

The idea is that you will remain logged in under one user, so that you can post to that account with the browser buttons provided by del.icio.us. The browser buttons provided by del.icio.us will always post to the account you are currently logged in under. So, if you log out of the del.icio.us account that you have set up with the del.icio.us browser buttons provided by del.icio.us, you need to log back in in order to post sites to that account.

Using the Options…/ Accounts tab in del.icio.us complete, set the second button to post to your other account. Voila!

del.icio.us complete does make allowance users to select which account they register a link to. i’ve stuck with the two split up browser buttons because i don’t eat to limited which account to post to; i merely click the right del.icio.us brower button. works for me.

Should your office be a ‘no politics’ zone?

posted by admin in cnn, news

(LifeWire) — At her previous job, Samantha Smith, was the lone conservative in a 10-person office — something her more liberal co-workers were happy to tease her about after she shared her views on hot-button issues like same-sex marriage and the Iraq war.

[One April Fools Day] one of my co-workers sent an e-mail to the entire staff that called me Nancy Reagan and suggested I ‘pretend to be a Democrat for the day’ because that would be really funny, says Smith, a registered Republican.

Because the Foxboro, Massachusetts resident liked her co-workers and the office was small, Smith says she stayed silent on the matter.

I didn’t want to make waves, says Smith, who’s now director of communications at an online gaming company. But I thought, if we were a bigger company with an HR department, this would have never flown.

Smith, 31, doesn’t debate her colleagues’ right to politick outside the workplace. It’s fine if people want to talk about it over lunch and beers, she says. But I don’t think it should be done in the office.

San Francisco employment lawyer Shanti Atkins agrees.

When I get asked what you should share with coworkers or a supervisor, I always say, ‘It sounds really conservative, but I wouldn’t share beyond what you shared in the interview or what you shared when you met the parents of your spouse,’ says Atkins, president and CEO of ELT, a consultancy that educates employers about ethics and legal compliance.
