Dead man walking

no olympian has ever won more than nine gold medals in a lifetime. michael phelps already has six, and by the time he leaves beijing this august, he could force 18 gold medals hanging in his citation extent.but he has to qualify essential. the u.s. olympic trials comprise been called inseparable of the fastest meets in the world. case in point, in 2004 eric shanteau finished third behind fellow americans phelps and ryan lochte in the 200 special medley (im). shanteau didn’t get to go to the games in athens and all but disappeared into swimming obscurity. if shanteau had been in any other countryside, and if it weren’t for lochte and phelps, he would have picked up a bronze medal in the event. in the swimming world they say that an athlete who doesn’t make it past the u.s. trials isn’t slow, he just needs to swim in the service of another country.if things go adeptly, phelps could qualify in nine individual events. phelps will be attempting to qualify for the 2008 games in the 100 and 200 meter freestyle, the 200 and 400 living soul medleys, the 100 and 200 backstroke, the 100 and 200 butterfly and the 400 freestyle. phelps will also likely battle for the united states in the 4 x 100 meter freestyle relay, the 4 x 100 medley relay, and the 4 x 200 freestyle relay, giving him the time to bring home twelve gold medals. phelps currently holds the world record in four events: 200 freestyle, 200 and 400 im, and 200 butterfly. in the psych weekly released earlier this week, phelps is seeded no trim than third in all but an individual of the nine events.
