Nadal and Murray march on at Wimbledon

posted by admin in cnn, news

LONDON, England (CNN) — World number two Rafael Nadal swept aside Germany Nicolas Kiefer for a resounding late evening victory on Centre Court to book his place in the last 16 at Wimbledon.

Nadal completed a 7-6 6-2 6-3 win in the gathering gloom on Saturday as he stayed on course for his second grand slam in a row having triumphed at the French Open earlier this month.

He would be the first man since Bjorn Borg to achieve the feat.

Veteran Kiefer faded fast after losing a first set tiebreaker but after falling 5-0 down in the third delighted the crowd with a late rally as he held his own service and proceeded to break Nadal for the first time.

It prompted a Mexican wave which inspired Kiefer to hold his own service again before the young Spaniard completed a victory after two hours 23 minutes by converting the first of three match points.

Football-mad Nadal is hoping his victory over a German opponent will be a good omen ahead of his country’s appearance in the final of Euro 2008 on Sunday.

I think we have good chances to win, we have an unbelievable team, was Nadal’s verdict as he spoke with BBC Sport after his third round match.

Mikhail Youzhny, of Russia, the 17th seed, awaits on Monday as he beat Czech Radek Stepanek in a five-set marathon, 7-5 6-7 6-4 6-7 6-3, the match finishing several minutes after Nadal’s clash and in near darkness.

Marin Cilic of Croatia was another late winner, defeating Paul-Henri Mathieu of France, 6-7 6-3 6-4 7-6.

Earlier, Britain’s Andy Murray kept home hopes very much alive heading into the second week at Wimbledon with a 6-4 6-7 6-3 6-2 victory over Germany’s Tommy Haas to reach the last 16.

12th seed Murray buckled down after the loss of the second set on tiebreak to earn a fourth round clash against Richard Gasquet of France, a semifinalist last year.

Eighth seed Gasquet saw off compatriot Gilles Simon 6-3 6-3 6-7 6-3 in an earlier last 32 clash.

Murray, who reached the fourth round two years ago, said he was confident of getting past Gasquet.

He’s a very talented player and has one of the best backhands in the game, but I feel like I’m playing well enough to win the match, Murray told BBC Sport.

Murray looked set to finish the third round clash against his experienced 30-year-old opponent in straight sets after taking the first set on a single break of service and breaking through on Haas’ service early in the second.

But Haas showed the quality which had lifted him to number two in the world rankings by breaking back to force a tiebreaker.

Murray was rattled for the only time in the match and with his first service malfunctioning it was the German who prevailed seven points to four in the breaker.

Murray came under intense pressure in the third game of the third set but survived the crisis before breaking Haas to lead 3-1.

Captain Ballack injury doubt for Germany

posted by admin in cnn, news

(CNN) — Germany captain Michael Ballack is a doubt for Sunday’s Euro 2008 final against Spain because of a calf injury.

The midfielder missed training in Vienna on Saturday to receive treatment at the team hotel.

The German football federation said that Ballack had hurt his right calf the day before and also missed Friday’s session which was not open to the media..

Ballack, 31, has been a key figure in Germany’s march to the final but has been troubled in the past by calf injury, missing the opening game of the 2006 World Cup with a similar problem.

He also had to sit out the 2002 World Cup final against Brazil because of suspension.

Chelsea’s Ballack has scored two goals in Euro 2008, the highlight a blistering free kick against Austria in a group mach and the third goal in the 3-2 quarterfinal win over Portugal.

Germany had earlier received good news about Ballack’s fellow midfielder Torsten Frings, who said he was fit for the final after a rib injury.

Frings featured in Germany’s opening three matches but he was forced to sit out his side’s quarterfinal victory over Portugal after suffering a broken rib in the last group game against Austria.

The vastly experienced Werder Bremen player returned to action during Wednesday’s semifinal against Turkey, after being sent on at half-time by coach Joachim Loew to counteract the early dominance of their opponents.

The move helped, with Germany much more effective after the break before going on to win the clash in Basel 3-2, although it remains to be seen which team Loew starts with against Spain.

Frings’ battling qualities in the heart of midfield could prove invaluable to the Germans, particularly if Ballack is sidelined, as they look to combat a Spanish side whose confidence is sky high heading into the clash at the Ernst Happel Stadium.

Luis Aragones’ side have been victorious in their last 11 matches and are unbeaten in 21, with their latest triumph being Thursday’s 3-0 defeat of Russia in their semifinal encounter.

2 dead after severe storms strike Plains

posted by admin in cnn, news

OMAHA, Nebraska (AP) — Severe storms with strong winds swept through the Plains on Friday, forcing swimmers practicing for U.S. Olympic trials in Omaha to flee pools and run for cover, killing two people in Iowa and knocking out power to thousands.

Officials at the Qwest Center near downtown Omaha closed the building to examine it after superstar swimmer Michael Phelps and hundreds of other athletes were herded into hallways because of a tornado warning.

Water poured into the building, down arena steps and onto the deck of the competition pool during the storm. The storm’s winds may have reached 100 mph in some areas, meteorologist Bryon Miller said.

An eight-day meet to decide the U.S. Olympic swimming team opens Sunday. Al Berndt, assistant director of the Nebraska Emergency Management Agency, said the damage appeared to be reparable and probably wouldn’t halt the swim trials.

Across the Missouri River in Council Bluffs, Iowa, two 18-year-old men died when a tree fell on the car they were in while they were at a friend’s house, said Police Sgt. Jason Bailey. Authorities used a backhoe to free a 15-year-old girl trapped in the back seat.

Damage reports in the region included toppled trees and power lines, and hail the size of baseballs. Flash flood watches were issued across Iowa, where flooding has been a problem in recent weeks. Watch how horizontal hail hit TV station

Berndt said no serious injuries were immediately reported in Omaha, but there were reports of a few house fires caused by lightning.

Hundreds of people had gathered for a 6 p.m. outdoor concert and for an arts festival in Omaha. Booths flipped over, and awnings and other covers were whipped away by strong winds.

The outdoor concert and fireworks at Memorial Park were canceled.

A spokesman for the Omaha Public Power District said that more than a third of its customers were without power. The district serves 330,000 customers.

There were widespread power failures in Council Bluffs, and Bailey said the police department was on auxiliary power.

The Missouri River Wastewater Treatment Plant, which serves the Omaha area, lost power, said Bryan Cook, duty officer for Nebraska Emergency Management.

Untreated wastewater was being discharged into the Missouri River, said Joe Gudenrath, spokesman for Omaha Mayor Mike Fahey. City officials told people to avoid wading or swimming in the water in the stretch of the river that passes by Omaha, and several miles downstream.

Outside the Qwest Center, chunks of what appeared to be material from the building were scattered about.

Phelps and his Club Wolverine teammates were walking from their hotel to the arena for afternoon practice when tornado sirens sounded, said two-time Olympian Erik Vendt, Phelps’ roommate during the meet.

Really ominous, that’s for sure, Vendt said.

Phelps’ mother, Debbie, was moved to the bottom floor of a nearby hotel where many of the swimmers are staying, he said.

After the storm passed, the Qwest Center was cleared, and swimmers headed outside to snap pictures of sheet metal and other material that had been blown around.

The arena’s closure had Jack Bauerle, coach of the U.S. women’s Olympic team, trying to arrange for another pool to practice in.

It’s an auspicious start, but everyone can adjust, he said. It’s no big deal, but at least it’s our job to tell them it’s no big deal. It’s just a change in plans.

Omaha police said streets were becoming clogged with traffic Friday evening because lanes were blocked by debris. Traffic lights were out throughout the city.

Eight hours of baseball in two different stadiums ended with both the Mets and Yankees scoring 15 runs and earning a split of their doubleheader.

The first game was the “Carlos Delgado Show” as Delgado hammered Yankees’ pitching for nine RBI’s thanks to two home runs, including a grand slam, and a two-run double. Delgado’s fireworks were part of a 15-hit attack that made a winner out of a shaky Mike Pelfrey. David Wright added four hits in the opener and three RBI’s of his own as the Mets prevailed 15-6.

And, with Pedro on the mound at Shea it seemed like the odds were in their favor to sweep the day, but Pedro wasn’t up to the task. Martinez was wild, walking five over five-plus innings and surrendering six runs. Sidney Ponson made his first start as a Yankee since 2006 and pitched six-shutout innings. Bobby Abreu went 4-for-4 on the night with three RBI’s and Derek Jeter added two RBI’s as the Yankees won the nightcap 9-0.

The Mets still lead the season series 3 games to 1 and the teams will resume their rivalry this afternoon at 3:55pm.
