Woman charged in death of eviscerated pregnant teen

posted by admin in cnn, news

PITTSBURGH, Pennsylvania (CNN) — A Pennsylvania woman has been charged in the slaying of an 18-year-old woman who was found with her uterus cut open and her fetus removed, authorities said Sunday.

Andrea Curry-Demus, 38, of Wilkinsburg was charged Sunday with homicide, kidnapping and unlawful restraint in connection with last week’s death of Kia Johnson, Allegheny County police Superintendent Charles Moffatt said.

Johnson’s body was found in Curry-Demus’ apartment Friday after authorities received calls of a foul odor coming from the unit, police said.

Johnson’s eviscerated body was in a state of moderate decomposition and she had been dead about two days, Medical Examiner Karl Williams said. The cause of death hasn’t been determined, he said.

The woman’s hands and feet were bound by duct tape. A placenta was found at the scene, Williams told reporters.

Johnson’s body was found two days after Curry-Demus arrived at a hospital with a newborn, claiming that it was hers, police said. Hospital personnel determined that the baby wasn’t Curry-Demus’, but authorities have not confirmed whether the infant belonged to Johnson, whose family reported her missing last week.

Curry-Demus was charged last week with endangering the welfare of a child, a felony, and dealing in infant children, a misdemeanor, after she brought the newborn to the hospital, authorities said. Watch Andrea Curry-Demus being taken into custody

Authorities said they used dental records to confirm Johnson’s identity.

Drugs were found at the apartment, and authorities are awaiting toxicology results to determine whether she was sedated, Williams said. It’s unclear whether Johnson was alive when the infant was taken, he added.

According to a criminal complaint, Curry-Demus was taken by ambulance to a local hospital Wednesday with the baby. The hospital notified police after tests determined that the baby wasn’t hers, authorities said.

In the complaint, Detective Rich Grande said he interviewed Curry-Demus, who told him she purchased the baby from a woman named Tina for $1,000. Curry-Demus told Grande she had suffered a miscarriage in June and did not want her mother to get upset.

According to the complaint, Curry-Demus said Tina showed up with her newborn wrapped in a towel and left. Curry-Demus said she called medics because the baby was still dirty from birth, the complaint said.

The baby is in good condition, a hospital spokeswoman said, and will be released to child welfare workers when he is ready.

Police Chief Ophelia Coleman said Johnson’s body was not found earlier because Curry-Demus’ sister led them to another apartment.

Friends and relatives said Curry-Demus had told them she was pregnant for months, even having a baby shower.

I went to the baby shower and her wedding, Ivee Blunt said. I had no idea something like this could happen. I’m totally shocked. And she was so nice and kind. It’s just unbelievable.

But sister-in-law Stephanie Epps said Curry-Demus would never allow her to touch her stomach.

Pregnant women do things like that, Epps said. They’re happy because they’re pregnant. But she would never do none of that.

Being led out of the Wilkinsburg Police Department, Curry-Demus told reporters, I didn’t do nothing, according to WTAE.

According to court records obtained by the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review, Curry-Demus became pregnant at 12 and miscarried four months later. She had a second miscarriage in 1990, when she was 21, the paper said.

Only a few months after the second miscarriage, Curry-Demus befriended a woman who had just given birth but later attacked her with a knife and tried to steal the baby, the paper said, citing the court records. The woman’s husband intervened, the newspaper reported, and she fled.

The next day, she went to a hospital and befriended a woman who had brought her 3-week-old daughter to the hospital to be treated for meningitis, the Tribune-Review said. When the woman went home for the night, Curry-Demus left the hospital with the baby. It was found at her home, unharmed, the following day.

In 1991, according to the records, she pleaded guilty to various charges stemming from both incidents and was sentenced to three to 10 years in prison, the newspaper reported. She was paroled in August 1998 and ordered to serve 10 years of probation, the paper said.

The newspaper reported, citing court records, that Curry-Demus was examined by psychiatrists at the Allegheny County Jail before her sentencing and was diagnosed with severe depression, personality disorders and auditory hallucinations. She told doctors she spent a lot of time thinking about her miscarriages and kept hearing babies cry, the Tribune-Review said.

Obama calls situation in Afghanistan ‘urgent’

posted by admin in cnn, news

KABUL, Afghanistan (CNN) — Sen. Barack Obama said Sunday that United States needs to focus on Afghanistan in its battle against terrorism.

The Afghan government needs to do more. But we have to understand that the situation is precarious and urgent here in Afghanistan. And I believe this has to be our central focus, the central front, on our battle against terrorism, Obama said in an interview Sunday on CBS’ Face the Nation.

I think one of the biggest mistakes we’ve made strategically after 9/11 was to fail to finish the job here, focus our attention here. We got distracted by Iraq, he said.

Obama said that troop levels must increase in Afghanistan.

For at least a year now, I have called for two additional brigades, perhaps three, he told CBS. I think it’s very important that we unify command more effectively to coordinate our military activities. But military alone is not going to be enough.

Obama met with with Afghan President Hamid Karzai on Sunday — a leader the Democratic senator has criticized for not doing enough to rebuild the war-torn nation.

The presumptive Democratic presidential nominee met with Karzai in the capital city of Kabul during Obama’s first visit to the Asian nation.

Karzai’s spokesman said the senator’s message was positive, according to The Associated Press.

Sen. Obama conveyed … that he is committed to supporting Afghanistan and to continue the war against terrorism with vigor, said Humayun Hamidzada, according to AP.

Obama traveled to eastern Afghanistan on Saturday to visit Americans forces under NATO’s Regional Command East, the coalition’s Combined Joint Task Force said. Obama is accompanied by Sen. Chuck Hagel, a Republican from Nebraska and Sen. Jack Reed, a Democrat from Rhode Island.

In a joint statement released Sunday, the three senators expressed confidence that progress would be made in Afghanistan.

We need a sense of urgency and determination. We need urgency because the threat from the Taliban and al Qaeda is growing and we must act; we need determination because it will take time to prevail. But with the right strategy and the resources to back it up, we will get the job done, they said in the statement.

Shortly after meeting with Karzai, Obama left Afghanistan to continue a trip that will take him to the Middle East and Europe.

Obama will travel to Jordan, then visit Israel, Germany, France and England.

Although Obama is making the trip as a senator from Illinois and not a presidential candidate, it is aimed at boosting Obama’s foreign policy credentials. Watch analyst discuss Obama’s visit in Afghanistan

Obama has made Afghanistan a key focus of his foreign policy, saying that he would make it the central front in the war on terror if elected.

Earlier in the day, Obama dined with U.S. troops at an American base in the Afghan capital. Watch Obama get some chow

This is my favorite thing to do, Obama said, as he sat with about two dozen soldiers, sailors and airmen in a military mess hall.

Ahead of the trip to Afghanistan, Obama, Reed and Hagel stopped in Kuwait to visit U.S. troops, said Obama campaign spokesman Robert Gibbs. They left Washington on Thursday.

In Kuwait, the senators visited Camp Arifjan for about two hours to meet with U.S. Army Central leadership, take a brief tour of the base and talk with soldiers, U.S. military spokesman Lt. Col. Bill Nutter said.

The senators also met with about 1,000 military members at a gymnasium, who cheered jubilantly at their arrival. Later, Obama played basketball with some soldiers, drawing cheers from his successful shots. Watch Obama visit troops in Kuwait

Asked if he would have tough talk for the leaders of Afghanistan and Iraq, Obama said he was more interested in listening than doing a lot of talking.

I think it is very important to recognize that I’m going over there as a U.S. senator. We have one president at a time, so it’s the president’s job to deliver those messages, Obama said.

The fight in Afghanistan has become a more pressing issue on the political radar. Three times as many coalition soldiers and other military personnel have died in July in Afghanistan, compared with Iraq. July’s death toll for coalition troops reached 22 Saturday, after the Friday death of a Canadian soldier was announced.

Nine U.S. soldiers were killed July 13 in a fight with about 200 Taliban militants in eastern Afghanistan. It was the deadliest attack on U.S. troops in Afghanistan in three years.

Shortly after Obama laid out his foreign policy vision in Washington on Tuesday, presumptive Republican nominee Sen. John McCain criticized his proposals as naive and premature. McCain visited Iraq in March.

I note that he is speaking today about his plans for Iraq and Afghanistan before he has even left, before he has talked to Gen. [David] Petraeus, before he has seen the progress in Iraq and before he has set foot in Afghanistan for the first time, McCain said.

In my experience, fact-finding missions usually work best the other way around: First, you assess the facts on the ground; then you present a new strategy.

British PM: Demands end to Israel settlements

posted by admin in cnn, news

BETHLEHEM (AP) — British Prime Minister Gordon Brown on Saturday demanded that Israel cease settlement construction and promised more money to jump-start the battered Palestinian economy.

In his first trip to Israel and the Palestinian territories as Britain’s leader, Brown repeatedly stressed that economics are key to Mideast peace, and said Israel should ease travel restrictions in the West Bank that have hindered commerce.

But his strongest comments were reserved for the settlements: I think the whole European Union is very clear on this matter: We want to see a freeze on settlements.

Settlement expansion has made peace harder to achieve. It erodes trust, it heightens Palestinian suffering, it makes the compromises Israel needs to make for peace more difficult, Brown said at a news conference with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas in the West Bank town of Bethlehem.

Israeli government spokesman Mark Regev said he would reserve comment on Brown’s remarks until the British leader meets with Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert in Jerusalem later Sunday.

Abbas went further in his criticism of Israel’s construction in disputed east Jerusalem and the adjacent West Bank, telling Brown that Israel lacks commitment to the principles and spirit of Mideast peace efforts. He singled out stepped-up construction of homes for Jews in areas of Jerusalem the Palestinians claim for their capital.

Israel and the Palestinians resumed peace talks late last year at a U.S.-backed conference in Annapolis, Md. Both sides had originally aspired to reach a final peace deal by the end of the year, but have backed away from that goal somewhat because of arguments over settlements and whether the Palestinians are capable of enforcing security in areas they control.

Under the first phase of the internationally backed road map peace plan, which forms the basis of the negotiations, Israel was to freeze all settlement construction and the Palestinians were to crack down on militant groups.

The international community is trying to bolster Abbas’ moderate government, and Brown said Britain would donate $60 million on top of $500 million the British government has pledged to the Palestinians over the next three years. He spoke of the need to create jobs by building industrial parks, promoting small businesses and putting up desperately needed housing. He also promised to help the Palestinians train their security forces.

Peace efforts are also complicated by the fact that the Gaza Strip is ruled by militants from Hamas. Ismail Haniyeh, who heads the Hamas government in Gaza, said Sunday that Brown should visit Gaza to see the humanitarian crisis caused by Israel’s blockade of the territory, unfortunately with the participation of several countries, including European countries and the British themselves.

Israel imposed a partial blockade on Gaza in response to rocket fire from the territory on southern Israel. A cease-fire currently in effect has decreased the rocket fire and has led Israel to increase the trickle of goods entering Gaza.

Brown’s two-day visit to the region has been overshadowed by a claim from a Shiite militia holding five British hostages in Iraq that one of the captives killed himself.
