People magazine gets Pitt-Jolie baby pictures

posted by admin in cnn, news

NEW YORK (AP) — A person involved in the negotiations for pictures of Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie’s newborn twins says the rights have fetched $14 million.

The person asked not to be named because he was not authorized to release the figure. People magazine scored the photos in a joint deal with the London-based Hello! magazine, and the two will split the bill.

It is the second time People magazine has won the North American rights to the couple’s exclusive baby pictures in exchange for a hefty donation to charity.

The magazine will feature Vivienne Marcheline and Knox Leon in an issue to hit newsstands Monday, People spokeswoman Nancy Valentino said Friday. Valentino said she didn’t know how much was paid for the photos, which were expected to fetch a figure that would dwarf previous baby-pic payouts.

We’re thrilled to be able to feature these pictures in People, managing editor Larry Hackett said in a statement.

People plans to unveil the first photo on its Web site on Sunday evening. CNN.com plans to link to the People story. Both CNN and People are units of the same company, Time Warner.

Even before the babies were born July 12 in Nice, France, the speculation began over which celeb mag would come out on top of an inevitable bidding war. The couple ultimately chose a familiar route in its joint deal between People and London-based Hello! magazine. Watch why the photos went for so much money

Jolie and Pitt sold the rights to the first shots of their daughter Shiloh, now 2 years old, to Getty Images in exchange for a donation to charity in 2005. People reportedly paid $4 million for the U.S. rights to those photos, and London-based Hello! magazine obtained the British rights.

And last year, the couple sold intimate shots of their son Pax, then 3 years old, to Hello! and People. The two magazines are again sharing the rights to the Jolie-Pitt photographs, with each publication contributing to the final price.

Getty Images was back in the game this time: In a statement, Getty co-founder and CEO Jonathan Klein said his company was delighted that all proceeds from these stunning images will once again be donated entirely to charity. It is a privilege to use the power of our imagery to make a difference in the lives of so many throughout the world through the Jolie-Pitt Foundation.

Decapitation suspect appears in court

posted by admin in cnn, news

(CNN) — A 40-year-old man was charged with second-degree murder Friday in connection with the stabbing and beheading death of his seatmate on a Greyhound Canada bus, authorities said.

Vince Weiguang Li of Edmonton, Alberta, stood silent before a judge Friday in the Provincial Court of Manitoba in Portage la Prairie, the Associated Press reported.

A prosecutor sought a psychiatric evaluation of the defendant, but the judge said he’d wait until Li had obtained an attorney, AP reported. Li is due back in court Tuesday.

The body of the 22-year-old male victim is to be autopsied Friday, police said. The victim’s name was not released.

However, the Canadian Press named the dead man as Tim McLean, 22, of Winnipeg, Manitoba.

McLean was repeatedly stabbed and then decapitated by the man sitting next to him on a Greyhound Canada bus Thursday west of Portage la Prairie in Manitoba.

Garnet Caton, who was sitting in front of McLean, talked of a bloodcurdling scream when the attack began.

It was like something between a dog howling and a baby crying, I guess you could say, Caton said. I don’t think it will leave me for a while. Watch Caton describe what he saw

Passengers exited the bus, and a trucker who stopped provided wrenches and crowbars to several of them so they could keep the suspect on the bus until police came, witnesses told Canadian TV.

The attacker was taken into custody after an hours-long standoff, during which he remained in the bus with the victim’s body. Police said Thursday he was seized after he broke a window and attempted to jump from the vehicle.

Several media outlets named McLean as the victim and said he had been returning home after working on a booth at an Alberta fair.

William Caron, 23, of Winnipeg, told Canadian Press he had known McLean since they went to school together.

I knew he was coming back from the [exhibition]. … My brother was supposed to go meet him at the bus depot and he never showed up. And then my younger brother and my other brother went to go to his parents’ place to see if they know anything, and they saw a bunch of news people there. And then they asked at his parents’ and that’s how we found out, Caron said.

By early Friday there were scores of condolence messages on Facebook groups set up to remember McLean.

Caron and his wife, Jodi, were among the first to leave notes.

We love you so much, wrote Jodi. The kids will miss you so much and so will William and I. You were a great person, always happy and loved and had an amazing personality.

I can’t believe this is happening, wrote Leah Dryburgh of Winnipeg. Tim, you were the best guy ever. You didn’t deserve this at all.

Witnesses on the bus said McLean had been sleeping with his head leaning against the window when the attack happened.

Colwell said there was no immediate indication of what prompted the attack. He said he didn’t know how many times the victim was stabbed. Witnesses described the weapon as a large butcher-type knife. Watch Colwell discuss the case

Colwell praised the extraordinary calmness and bravery of the bus driver and passengers.

What you saw and what you experienced would shake the most seasoned police officer. And yet I’m told that each of you acted swiftly, calmly and bravely, Colwell said. As a result, no one else was injured.

The bus was traveling along the Trans-Canada Highway from Edmonton to Winnipeg, and was about 45 minutes from its destination when the attack occurred, Greyhound spokeswoman Abby Wambaugh said in Dallas, Texas.

Caton told the AP that the attacker didn’t sit near the victim when he first got on the bus, about an hour before the attack.

Moderate growth foreseen for U.S. economy

posted by admin in cnn, news

WASHINGTON (AP) — U.S. Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson says the $168 billion government stimulus effort has proven to be a timely support for the U.S. economy and will continue to assist growth in the second half of this year.

Paulson predicted in a speech Thursday the economy will continue growing moderately the rest of this year even though the country faces major problems from the housing slump.

Paulson said we are making progress although not in a straight line. He added that housing continues to be at the heart of our economic challenges and remains our most significant downside risk.

Paulson said the economy needs to work through adjustments in housing and credit markets, for the country to return to stronger growth next year and beyond.

Paulson spoke on a day the government released a report showing that the housing and credit crises continued to weigh on the economy. The gross domestic product expanded at an annual rate of 1.9 percent in the April-June quarter, double the 0.9 percent increase in the first three months of the year.

The government estimated that the economy shrank in the final three months of last year, however, at an annual rate of 0.2 percent. It’s the first time GDP has declined since the 2001 recession.

Checks sent out to millions of U.S. households earlier this year to stimulate the economy have helped, though, Paulson said.

U.N. votes to extend mission in Darfur

posted by admin in cnn, news

UNITED NATIONS (CNN) — The United Nations Security Council Thursday passed a resolution to extend its peacekeeping mission in Darfur despite U.S. complaints about the resolution.

The resolution passed overwhelmingly, with all countries in the council voting for it, except the United States. A U.S. representative did not cast a vote, citing concerns about the wording of the resolution.

The one-year peacekeeping mandate was set to expire until Thursday’s vote extended it for another year.

Alejandro Wolff, the deputy U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, said the United States was concerned about one paragraph in the resolution that alluded to the idea of suspending the investigation into Sudan President Omar Hassan al-Bashir for a period of time.

The U.S. abstained in the vote because language added to the resolution would send the wrong message to Sudanese President Bashir and undermine efforts to bring him and others to justice, Wolff said. This council cannot ignore the terrible crimes that have occurred throughout the conflict in Darfur.

Al-Bashir, may face a possible indictment for war crimes. Earlier this month, Luis Moreno-Ocampo, chief prosecutor of the International War Crimes tribunal, filed charges against the president.

The alleged crimes stem from a brutal counter-insurgency campaign the Sudanese government conducted after rebels began an uprising in Darfur in 2003.

The United States has characterized the campaign as genocide.
