Parolee arrested in taped elevator mugging

posted by admin in cnn, news

NEW YORK (CNN) — Police arrested a man they say confessed to mugging an elderly woman in an elevator last week — an attack that was caught on surveillance video.

Cornelius Abson, 36, confessed during police questioning to that attack and another strong-arm robbery, Police Commissioner Ray Kelly told reporters Thursday.

Abson was on parole after being conditionally released from prison in May, Kelly said.

He is a repeat felon with 11 prior arrests and has been convicted of similar crimes in the past, the commissioner added.

The attack took place August 14 in the elevator of an apartment building in Brooklyn’s Prospect Heights neighborhood. Watch the elderly victim struggle

Surveillance video released by the New York Police Department shows 85-year-old Lillian France in the elevator with a suspect.

Caylee’s mom mobbed as she leaves jail

posted by admin in cnn, news

ORLANDO, Florida (AP) — The mother of a missing central Florida toddler was released from jail on $500,000 bail Thursday and ordered to return to her parents’ home, where authorities will monitor her with an electronic ankle device.

Casey Anthony, 22, said nothing as she left the Orange County jail Thursday.

She faces charges of child neglect, making false statements and obstructing an investigation in the disappearance of 3-year-old Caylee, who has been missing since June.

Police say Casey Anthony lied to them and didn’t report Caylee missing for more than a month. Caylee’s grandmother reported her disappearance in July.

Anthony’s attorney, Jose Baez, escorted her out of the jail under a black umbrella amid a throng of reporters. He got into a scuffle with a journalist, pushing him out of the way.

Anthony, who has been jailed since mid-July, was instructed to go to her parents’ home and plug her electronic monitoring device into her phone, Orange County Corrections spokesman Allen Moore said.

A hearing in the case was scheduled Thursday morning, but Anthony was not expected to appear.

A group from a California bail bonds company flew to Florida on Sunday to help Clearwater-based bondsman Albert Estes post the bond. They said they believe Anthony might be more likely to talk about her daughter’s disappearance if she were released from jail. Watch why they think winning her freedom might help

Anthony told investigators she left Caylee in an apartment with a nanny June 9. But investigators say the apartment had been empty for several months.

She told detectives she didn’t immediately call authorities to report Caylee missing because she was conducting her own investigation, according to an affidavit.

But authorities say Anthony, a single mother, has shown no remorse or concern for Caylee under questioning. Cadaver-sniffing dogs detected a scent in her car, and hair, dirt and a strange stain were found in the trunk. Investigators are still awaiting FBI tests on that evidence.

Fay stays put, flooding Florida’s east coast

posted by admin in cnn, news

PORT ST. LUCIE, Florida (CNN) — Tropical Storm Fay stayed put off the east coast of Florida overnight, barely moving as it dumped more rain on the waterlogged state.

The deluge has flooded thousands of homes, prompting Florida’s governor to ask for federal aid. Some residents were being ferried to safety on air boats.

The storm was expected to make its third landfall in Florida on Thursday, this time in the Jacksonville-Daytona Beach area, forecasters said.

At Cape Canaveral, NASA reported 21 inches of rain Wednesday, said Craig Fugate, Florida’s emergency management director.

Fay could dump as much as 30 inches of rain in isolated areas, forecasters said.

As of 5 a.m. ET Thursday, the storm was just off the coast of central Florida about 20 miles east-southeast of Daytona Beach, the National Hurricane Center said.

The storm, with its 60 mph winds, was nearly stationary, but was expected to make a gradual turn to the north-northwest and crawl across the state as the day went on.

The storm continues to be a threat to this community, Jacksonville Mayor John Peyton said at a Wednesday afternoon news conference. Looks like the worst is still ahead.

The Navy announced late Wednesday afternoon it was moving several ships and aircraft out of Fay’s path. Naval Air Station Jacksonville evacuated 24 P-3 Orion aircraft to military bases in Maine and Ohio.

Florida Gov. Charlie Crist has asked President Bush to declare an emergency in the state to free up federal funding.

The storm is producing historic flooding across a large portion of Brevard County, Crist wrote in a letter to Bush. Fay has and will continue to produce copious amounts of rain over a large portion of northeast Florida as the storm turns westward on August 21.

The governor pre-emptively declared a state of emergency last week.

Storm tides of 1 to 3 feet above normal are possible along the Florida’s east coast, the hurricane center said, adding that isolated tornadoes are possible over portions of northeastern Florida and southeast Georgia.

On the southeast coast of Florida, Fay flooded hundreds of homes in St. Lucie County, authorities said. Rescuers were using airboats and other means Wednesday to pick up stranded residents.

The severe flooding in St. Lucie County took authorities by surprise.

Meg Defore said that the first floor of her home was 14 feet above ground but that water had reached the top of her doors. She left in a small boat. Watch a dog swim and folks row boats in the streets of Port St. Lucie

Near the north fork of the St. Lucie River, water gushed down streets and lapped at the doors of parked cars.

iReporter Bethany Schulstrom, 16, said water was up to people’s knees in the streets of Port St. Lucie.

Shamed rocker Glitter denied Hong Kong entry

posted by admin in cnn, news

HONG KONG (AP) — Disgraced British glam rocker Gary Glitter, who served nearly three years in a Vietnamese prison for molesting children, was denied entry to Hong Kong after refusing to return to England, officials said Wednesday.

Glitter flew to Hong Kong on Wednesday night after staying in the transit area of Bangkok’s international airport for several hours.

The Chinese authorities have informed us that they have refused Paul Gadd entry into Hong Kong, a spokeswoman for Britain’s Foreign Office said. Glitter’s real name is Paul Francis Gadd.

It’s a matter for the Chinese authorities what happens next, she said.

A second Foreign Office spokesman said Glitter was interviewed by Chinese immigrations officials after arriving in Hong Kong.

Glitter was turned away as a result of those interviews, the spokesman said. Both officials spoke on condition of anonymity, citing official policy.

In a statement, the Hong Kong government said that it doesn’t comment on individual cases but that immigration officials would take into consideration all relevant factors and circumstances when processing applications.

It was the third country to bar Glitter in the last two days.

On Tuesday night, Glitter was taken from his prison cell to a flight out of Ho Chi Minh City in Vietnam. He had been booked to change planes in Bangkok en route to London. Watch how he was deported from Vietnam

He refused to board a flight to England, however, complaining of an earache. Thai authorities would not allow him to pass through immigration, leaving him in limbo.

Lt. Gen. Chatchawal Suksomchit, the chief of Thailand’s immigration police, said Glitter was denied entry because under Thai immigration laws, those convicted of child sex abuse in another country can be barred.

But another officer said his department received a note from Vietnam and Interpol requesting that Glitter not be allowed entry into Thailand. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak to the press.

Col. Voravat Amornvivat of Thailand’s Immigration Police division said officials turned Glitter over to the custody of Thai Airways on Wednesday afternoon, after he agreed to travel to a third country.

Glitter, 64, was convicted in March 2006 of committing obscene acts with children. He served two years and nine months of a three-year sentence, which was reduced for good behavior.

The incidents involved two girls, ages 10 and 11, from the southern coastal city of Vung Tau. The verdict said he had molested the girls repeatedly at his seaside villa in Vung Tau and in nearby hotels.

Although Glitter proclaimed his innocence, he was sentenced to three years in prison.

Glitter’s fall from grace began in 1997, when he took his computer to a repair shop and an employee there discovered that he had downloaded thousands of hardcore pornographic images of children. Two years later, British authorities convicted him of possession of child pornography, and Glitter served half of his four-month jail term.

The news hit as British Home Secretary Jacqui Smith announced a raft of new measures to tighten controls on people convicted of sexual offenses against children.

Kite-surfer who hit building improving, mom says

posted by admin in cnn, news

MIAMI, Florida (CNN) — The condition of a kite-surfer thrown airborne into a Fort Lauderdale building by strong winds this week has improved, his mother said Wednesday.

Broward General Medical Center upgraded Kevin Kearney’s condition from critical to serious Wednesday morning, said his mother, Alicia Paradise-Garza.

Monday’s incident, which a television crew captured on video as Tropical Storm Fay approached Florida, left the 28-year-old Kearney with spinal fractures, brain swelling, a broken rib and a broken ankle, among other injuries.

Kearney was harnessed to a kite, or sail, along a Fort Lauderdale, Florida, beach when strong wind caught the kite, sending him into the air, WFOR-TV reported. Watch wind lift Kearney into the air

WFOR video shows Kearney rise into the air before slamming into the beach and being dragged for a brief time along the sand.

The kite then lifted into the air again, slamming him into a nearby building, WFOR reported.

Paradise-Garza said Wednesday her son is able to walk but has spent a lot of time sedated at the hospital so his injuries could be treated.

She said Kearney has no recollection of what happened, and that no one has yet shown him the footage of Monday’s incident.

In a statement given to the news media the family said Kearney, a Fort Lauderdale resident, is an experienced kite-boarder.
