Nov. 28, 1926: New Philadelphia  students in the 7th through 9th grades looked forward to attending classes at the new Welty Junior High the next day. Nov. 29 was the first day of classes.Nov. 27, 1940: The first men of the selective service draft left Tuscarawas County. Nov. 26, 1902: The National Clothing and Shoe Co. store was organized on Factory St.  and later moved to 3rd St. at Canal Dover in what is today the Lenhart Building. Nov. 25, 1952: American Federation of Labor Presiden, William Green of Coshocton died. His funeral was held at Coshocton and  was attended by George Meany who had been named as his successor. Nov. 24, 1976: The Pennsylvania Railroad’s Round-house at Dennison was destroyed by fire. Nov. 23, 1900: A home was found for Caroline Quantrill, who had been living in an infirmary and now would stay in the state Odd Fellows Home at Springfield. She was the mother of William Clarke Quantrill, a Dover native who led a Confederate guerrilla unit during the Civil War. He died in 1865. Nov. 22, 1903: The Reeves Banking and Trust Co. (now Huntington) opened on 3rd St. in Dover.

Nov. 21, 1900: The U.S. Census released the population totals of the largest towns and villages in Tuscarawas County for 1900: Canal Dover, 5,422; Dennison, 3,763; Newcomerstown, 2,659; New Philadelphia, 6,213 and Uhrichsville 4,582. Nov. 20, 1952: President-elect Dwight Eisenhower named Charles Ervin his secretary of defense. Ervin spent younger years in Mineral City before becoming president of General Motors. Nov. 19, 1825:  The death sentence of John Funston was handed down by a jury of his peers. Funston was convicted of the murder of William Cartmell, a post boy from Coshocton. The sentence was to be carried out Dec. 30, 1825. Nov. 18, 1948: The Tuscarawas County prosecuting Attorney announced a county wide crack down on gambling. Nov. 17, 1808: Rev. David Zeisberger, founder of numerous Christian Indian missions in the late 18th century and served the Moravian Church for more than 60 years without renumeration, died and was buried Nov. 20, 1808, at the Goshen Cemetery. This marks the 200th anniversary of his death. Nov. 16, 1825:  The trial of John Funston, the suspect in the Post Boy Murder, began. In 1922, Tuscarawas County’s only governor, Alvin Victor Donahey, was elected.Nov. 15, 1893:  The Sharp Opera House on 2nd St. SE in New Philadel-phia was destroyed by fire.Nov. 14, 1896: The first football game between teams from  Dover and New Philadelphia high schools was held on a Saturday afternoon. Nov. 13, 1916: It was announced that James M. Cox spent $4,375 in his successful campaign to become governor of Ohio. Nov. 12, 1948: Pittsburgh Plate Glass announces the purchase of the Rutledge- owned Midvale Mine Co. that was initially incorporated in 1917. Nov. 11, 1929:  E. M. Viquesney’s life-size metal statue of a World War I doughboy was dedicated on the courthouse plaza by attorney R.N. Wilkins. Nov. 10, 1778: White Eyes, a Delaware Indian chief, died of smallpox. The Tuscarawas County Agricultural Society (County Fair) was organized on this date in 1849. Nov. 9, 1909: Judge Harvey Barnhill was appointed the first judge of Tuscarawas County Juvenile Court.

Nov. 8, 1916: The Tuscarawas Telephone Co. and The Daily Times teamed up to keep lines open to all precincts until the ballots were counted. All results were reported by 6 a.m. the next day, the earliest in area election history.Nov. 7, 1946: The Sugarcreek  Livestock Auction was incorporated. It is still functioning today. Nov. 6, 1957: Electors selected the following as mayors in Tuscarawas County: Doyle Stocker, New Philadelphia; Clifford Froelich, Dover; Jesse Dempster, Uhrichsville; George Grimm , Dennison; and D.O. Beiter, Newcomerstown.Nov. 5, 1965:  Noted barrister Arthur Limbaugh, who presided over the first intermediate military government courts on German soil after World War II, died in Timken Mercy Hospital at Canton.
