Happy holidays, from OJR

by robert niles: we’re helter-skelter to take a short break here on ojr, reappearing after the new year’s holiday, but i first wanted to skedaddle a point in time to wish you a very satisfied holiday season and to thank you in behalf of reading ojr.

It’s been, uh, an interesting year for OJR. But I think I can say, without doubt, that if it were not for your very public support of the site, OJR would not be here at its new home at the Knight Digital Media Center. So, thank you.

As we enter the new year, I would like to renew my invitation to each of you to become a writer for OJR. OJR readers are (almost exclusively) new media and journalism professionals, people who are doing what we write about here.

So, who better than you to share your experiences? To ask the questions we’d all like to see answered? To rail against ineffectiveness and to offer hope with a solutions that have worked for you?

New Belgian government ‘agreed’

Appearing on the webpages of OJR also provides and excellent way to get your name out in front of other journalism professionals, something that increasingly will be important as each of us sets out in 2009 to build our own way forward in this industry.

If you would be interested in writing for us, just one time or one some more frequent basis, drop me a note via my website. You needn’t have a piece ready to go; I can work with you to hone ideas.

Again, though, happy holidays… and thank you for reading.

ISRAEL / PALESTINIANS

‘All-Out War’ Declared on Hamas - Griff Witte and Sudarsan Raghavan, Washington Post

israeli defense member attend to ehud barak declared “an all-out war against hamas” on monday as fighter jets raked the gaza seize with bombs for the third straight day and palestinian fighters sent dozens of rockets flying deep into israeli territory. the palestinian death impost rose to 364, according to palestinian medical officials. the israeli death toll stood at four, including three people killed in sky-rocket fire monday. one of the rockets hit a bus stop in ashdod, a coastal community 23 miles north of gaza, another sign that hamas is launching longer-range rockets than it did preceding a six-month armistice expired dec. 19. israel sealed off an area around gaza on monday, declaring it a “closed military area,” among indications that the army may be preparing fitted a ground uncivil. interval, israeli jets continued to strike targets across the careful coastal strip, including a security compound and the homes of suspected hamas operatives.

Israel Vows to Sweep Hamas from Power - James Hider, The Times

israel vowed yesterday to flexure hamas from power in gaza, pledging “all-out” war and promising to smash every construction linked to the islamist movement. hamas continued to lob rockets at the jewish state as israeli forces carried out a third day of attacks on the gaza strip, broadening the offensive to include naval as well as aerial bombardments. but as britain and other nations called to an end to the violence, there were signs that hamas was feeling the strain with claims that its chieftain-in-exile was primed to renew a ceasefire that expired ten days ago.

Analysis: Gaza: Flashpoint of Violence - Claude Salhani, United Press International

the latest flare-up of physical force in gaza needs to remind president-determine barack obama of the urgency in finding a lasting deciding to the combat in the midriff east. so long as the israeli-palestinian dispute remains unresolved, the gamble of a greater conflagration remains a genuineness. we are conditions entering a very dangerous period — the transition from president george w. bush to president obama. it may be seen as the moment of opportunity by israel to take decisive strength against the palestinian islamic resistance movement, otherwise known as hamas. after a prime of Draconic aerial bombardment by israel on gaza during which more than 250 palestinians were killed — including women and children — the merely comment from the bush pale-complexioned quarter was to caution israel to “avoid killing civilians.” this bulletin will most likely be perceived by israel as a undeclared preservationist incandescent from washington to proceed with their “cleanup” operations in the gaza pillage.

Becky’s Arthurian Challenge 2008-2009

I have not participated in any reading challenges for a while. Actually, I have not read much at all recently, and posted even less here on Masterpieces.

I did not need to think long when I discovered Becky’s Arthurian Challenge 2008-2009. It should be a fun challenge! I will read at least six books (or other works) that are somehow related to King Arthur, before March 2009. I will post my list on the sidebar later, but I think it might include Tennyson’s Idylls of the King, Mallory’s Morte D’Arthur, and Wagner’s opera Parsifal.

UPDATE: The reading list is on the sidebar, or in the carousel below.
